UNI to the Big 12?

No time like the present...

I really don't see the problem with affiliate members. If the conference itself can't muster a sufficient number of teams for a sponsored sport, then they need to open it up for affiliate members. How would having affiliate members for wrestling hurt the Big 12?

I don't think it would hurt the Big 12. Frankly, I think they owe serious consideration of this to their remaining members who have wrestling programs.

My point was the rules are made by the member universities and can easily be changed by the member universities.

Seems like everybody in this deal either wins (schools with wrestling) or doesn't lose anything (schools without wrestling).

No reason not to amend the rules for a sport that most of the schools don't participate in.

I wont notice the difference, because the only wrestling I watch involves this guy:

UNI was D2 until the early 80s so this can't be true.

You are correct. My memory was off. I'm sure the scenario I was thinking of was ISU-UI ranked 1-2, and UNI ranked 1st in DII, which could have been for a more extended period of time, than like a one time occurrence, which is more consistent with my memory.

They became DI in 1981 and DII in 1963, when they competed in both tournaments.

Prior to that their record in DI was pretty good, including this stretch under McCuskey (who then left for UI):

1946 2nd place
1947 2nd place
1948 4th place
1949 2nd place
1950 1st place
1951 4th place
1952 2nd place

Without looking into all the detail, I wouldn't be surprised if their NCAA finishes on the whole were better than UI, at the time they became DII in 1963. If you click on 1953 - 1964 Coach Bill Koll you can see that they were pretty regularly about 10th or higher:

Since this is a message board, note that I did not say definitively, but rather that "I wouldn't be surprised."

Until relatively recently, very few teams could claim even a single DI national title.

BTW, I remember meeting UNI Coach Chuck Patton (1965-1982) once maybe twice at a tournament or camp. I was pretty young, so this had to be a youth tournament, but I definitely recall the introduction and his little speech and words of encouragement. So it was a big deal in a way, or seems that way when you are that young. I recall that he was very friendly and outgoing and helpful, a very positive interaction.

UNI finished 2nd in 1980, under Patton, their last year in DII, and 12th and 10th in 1981 and 1982, respectively, when they were back to DI.
