UNI to drop baseball

Now that's BS.

Do you know how many football programs actually make money? Hardly any. Football is a huge expense.

Men's collegiate athletic teams have been around for over a century. Women have to get a law passed to so they can field a team? That's awful.

I'm a huge UNI baseball fan. I cannot tell you how sad this news makes me feel. I respect Rick Heller so much I cannot even express my feelings in words. But please don't blame this on Title IX. Blame this on the economy. Blame this on UNI's stepchild-like status in the state of Iowa. Blame this on the McCleod Center. Blame this on donors not giving enough money. Blame this on President Allen, who came from ISU. Don't blame the women. We've already made them second-class citizens once in our country's history. Don't do it again.

The fact is FB pays for most things in an athletic dept. The fact is if there was no football there would be no other college sports. The other fact is at most schools the only 2 sports most will go see is mens basketball and FB. The fact is womens sports suck money out of an athletic dept. The fact is besides FB and BB mens sports suck money out of an athletic dept. It is an issue with Title IX when FB counts against the number of mens scholorships. Dont give us the step-child status, boo boo no one cares about UNI, its not our fault your alum dont even care. Blame it on a new building that is progress for UNI, really. Why dones it matter where your pres comes from.

Classes are relatively small and TAs don't teach. UNI is more of a mom and pop outfit compared to Iowa and Iowa State. Allen just isn't used to that way of running things (for better or worse). I also mention Allen and ISU because we all know ISU doesn't have a baseball program (sorry, Lyle!).

I am in no way saying FB isnt a man sport. I am saying it is a crock that you have to count so many scholarships against the mens university total, because of FB.

It should...ISU and Iowa double UNI in students and I guess it could be a research institution, but I'm guessing it doesn't compare to the research that happens here (Iowa State) and at the University of Iowa.

If we do, shouldn't we just take women's right to vote away, too? Come on, if they don't deserve equal rights on the athletic field, why should they have suffrage?

Why would UNI want to be a big research school? Just be another face in the crowd? Just another number to some pimply-faced TA? No thanks. Dollar for dollar, UNI is one of the best schools in the Midwest.

By using that standard most college sports are worthless because there is no pro level to get them ready for. Heck most college BB and FB players never get a wiff of the pros, are those sports worthless. College sports are about more than just getting ready for the pros.

You're right about that, but if you're of the opinion that college athletics exist for young men and women to better themselves while getting an education, you're fooling yourself. College athletics exist for one reason, and one reason only - to make money, and lots of it.

Second, college football programs do make money. I know I'm a bit late getting in on this point, but last year the Iowa football program turned a profit of 11 million.

FYI, another reason colleges have many sports, former athletes are more likely to make large donations to the athletic department than traditional students...

Another bit of info to chew on. 50% of women who play college sports their freshman year do not complete their senior year in that sport. Compare that with over 90% of men...

Because there are no women's sports that require the massive amount of numbers it takes to field a football team, schools have to make up for it by having a disproportionate number of women's sports compared to men's.

Go count sometime, I think Iowa State offers 6 or so MORE women's sports than things that are offered for men. I'm not saying that Title IX is the sole reason that UNI cut Baseball, but it did at one time force a lot of university to kill men's sports to make up this "flaw" in the rule.

Equality? Title IX hasn't really done that. Why can women play tennis at ISU, but not men? What about swimming & diving? Softball, but no baseball? Soccer? I don't know UNI's situation, but basing this purely on scholarships did take arguably an unfair toll on men's sports.

It still wouldn't be perfect, but I think things would be more fair if the rule was more along the lines offering the same number of varsity sports, not scholarships, as I believe I explained earlier in the thread.

Maybe you could base scholarship requirments on being equal to the men's counterpart? Baseball schollies = Softball's, equal amounts of men and womens track schollies?

This neo-feminism is getting old. Nobody is saying that women are worse athletes than men. What we are saying, however, is that there is not the fan interest in womens' sports (for the most part) as there is in mens, and the fact that some of our favorite mens sports are getting dropped for less popular ones is annoying.

Title IX has cost wrestling, baseball, and other programs around the nation, while increasing the number of women's golf teams, rowing teams, swimming teams, etc... all the while these programs drain athletic departments.

D-I athletics are about two things - fans and $$$. While it's true that women deserve every opportunity to be a D-I athlete, it should NOT be at the expense of men.

That's kind of my whole point. Football skews things out of proportion and is why I think Title IX is flawed. There ISN'T as sport comparable for women to football.

It has nothing to do with them being less of an athlete, if you can come up with a sport for women that takes that many people to field a team, more power to you.

I'm saying make it if you offer 7 varsity sports for men, you have to offer 7 varsity sports for women.

And you didn't answer my question. Why is it fair not to let men swim? compete in gymnastics? play soccer or tennis? I just think you get much closer to equality if you balanced the number of sports offered, OR balanced scholarships if you exempted football.

And his point is that the football program - in no way, shape, or form - would take away from your daughters ability to get a scholly. Rhoads giving a scholly to a 3rd string punter doesn't take one away from Bill Fenelly - they're 2 seperate entities.
