UNI game....

IMO that close win against Iowa is just what this team needed to get their heads out their @#%. I'm guessing with Burton being eligible now our big men play a little less scared.

I agree with the sentiment and hope your right but how many times did we say that last year?

This. I told myself that after the Maryland and South Carolina losses yet we still dropped terrible games to K-State, Texas Tech, and at home to Baylor. It's like right after a loss we are focused but once we win again and we rank up again, we go back to our cocky ways. If it wasn't for the Big 12 Tournament run, we would have been a 5 seed at best.

That might have been better.

Totally agree. I don't know what it is but these players for years haven't gotten around screens very well. I was taught to always go around screener on top and the player guarding the screener would step out to help until we got over and caught up. I see us go under too many times. You are right they need to be a lot more physical and fight thru those screens up top.

I've thought this same thing for a long time, also.....I watch lots of college games, and it sure seems like teams use high screens against us a lot. I've also noticed that our guys aren't nearly as good at screening as our opponents. (Not ********, mind you, just an observation.)

Also - how do you post a reply with the OP's words in the little gray balloon, in italics? (Sorry, haven't been able to figure it out on my own)

As many of you probably already know from last season, I'm a proud and passionate dual fan (yes, I do know how ridiculous that looks in writing on here, but it's the truth).

I really, really, really wish that this game would have happened last season between the two teams, or even that last year's UNI team could play this season's ISU team. I honestly think that not only would it have been The Game of the Year in the state of Iowa, but that it could have been a contender for National Game of the Year. I would have seriously considered getting a ticket and flying in from Colorado for it, and I'm always going to think it's a shame that it didn't happen (while also recognizing that both teams were completely powerless to make it happen).

Anyway, I'm expecting a close game, as usual, with ISU winning between 5-10 points in the end. And I'm just fine with that. I hope that both teams can come away healthy without any injuries. That's a win-win for me.

When looking at the post you want to reply to, at the bottom right click on "Reply With Quote" then type away.

Don't worry it takes most of us 5 years to figure that out too.

I do not think we will lose this game. But Jacobson is masterful at slowing down games to a grind, and that's exactly what we don't want. I still think we win, but I wouldn't be shocked if we dropped this game.

Yes I agree re full strength roster...Deonte Burton being available will really help against a deliberate attack employed by UNI...........Also the reduced shot clock to 30 seconds will also help us............

Go Cyclones

I hope so, but I doubt Burton provides much immediate help. Last year McKay barely played against Drake and was a little clumsy in the first few games.

Seems almost a consensus here that this will be a tough game. I like the respect for Jacobsen, but also have now seen our man manage 2 games well - making key decisions that helped us get the W, eg Illinois and Iowa. He can't make shots for the players, but he can put them in the best position to win.

It is really interesting that defense is becoming a bigger part of this team, and the sense that this team can win games through defense if they’re shooting poorly. I am not as critical as some of the defense of Georges or Naz; it seems to me that Prohm likes Naz on the floor for more than his shooting, because he has had huge minutes for a guy struggling on offense – 38 minutes against Iowa, the same as Georges and Monte. The reinvented Matt Thomas is a sight to be seen; scoring 19 points while covering a major offensive threat is quite the accomplishment. Given the #$%^ that he has endured on CF ever since he got here, I am more than happy for him. He sure has paid his dues. However, Mackay struggles with perimeter defense but Nader worries me the most. When things are not going well, either for him individually or as a team, he tends to force offensive plays that aren't there - and as often as not, either turns the ball over or draws a foul. On D, he seemed to flat out disappear at times against Iowa and I suspect that is why he sat a fair bit on Thursday – only 13 minutes compared to Thomas’ 28. If Nader could relax a bit, he can have an absolutely monstrous season, but he has to be more consistent on D and more patient on offense. In my mind, if we are going to be a top 10 team at the end of the year, we will need Nader to full his role effectively.

I could see Burton playing pretty sparingly against UNI and Cincinnati but then getting a lot of run against Coppin State to try to bring him into the fold as much as possible before we start Big 12 play.

McKay hadn't played a game in almost two years let alone any d1 games. Button won't be as sluggish. Still don't expect him to hit fill form until mid conference though.

If ISU shows up and plays their own fundamentally strong game, and just worries about doing things well and in control, I would think their athleticism and speed would take over.

If they show up and try to make a highlight reel, and/or are lazy on defense (the two usually coincide with this group) they could be in for a long night.
