I just got back from a awards banquet over here in CR, the guest speaker was none other than the "voice of the squakeyes" gary dolphin.

This guy killed me, over an HOUR at the mike, talking squak football, basketball and ,repeatedly, how they "only offered 1 guy the basketball coach job".

From what I could tell even the die hards in the crowd were growing weak from nagging bladders and unending boredom. dolphin is nothing if not a guy that likes to hear himself talk.

At the end bob brooks said a few words, and he was actually pretty funny and concise - even with dophin grabbing at the mike trying to get another few words in.

Last year Rick Hartzel (UNI AD) spoke, and I would've listened to 10 of his speeches in a row compared to the dolphin jackass.

Now I need go to scrub the propagnda slime off of me:no6xn:

You poor guy. If that hour was anything like his play by play performance during Hawkeye sports events, I would have left.

Sorry about the bad Dolphin experience. One thing he has given is one of the greatest radio calls in history, Tate to Holloway. I'm not an Iowa homer or anything, but I had goosebumps for an hour.

But yeah, I find Hartzell to be extremely engaging. Whenever I see interviews with him on tv, or even in the paper, I'm very impressed. He's always straight-up with you and says what he thinks. I admire that dude.

Know of somewhere online we can hear it?

I agree Dolphin is one boring dude, but there is one line that he had that cracked me up last season. I was watching some of the Iowa replay against Montana for some odd reason and after their punter made a nice punt Dolphin said, "And he jacks off a beauty". Maybe it is the immaturity in me but I found it rather funny.

maturity has nothing to do with reacting to that quote - Anyone who DOESN'T laugh at that is a commmunist. :laugh8kb:

i was watching the iowa vs OSU game for a little bit. almost every time the back-up running back for OSU(Wells) got the ball, he called him Sims. Ironically, Iowa running back Damion Sims has the same number as Wells.

That just shows you how tunnel visioned hawkeyes are. They only know things about the hawks. And often they don't know much about them either but they will argue points like they do.

I have to admit, I'm a Dolphin homer. Hearing his play-by-play while I worked at a HyVee in Iowa City during games created somewhat of a Stockholme Syndrome for that town. And I do get chills every time I hear that Tate to Holloway call.

I am ashamed. :sorry8bj:

I agree that Dolphin is part of one of the greatest call's in broadcasting history. However I think anyone in the booth could have done it that day. I too get chills when I hear it but I don't think it matters who made the call, it was the amazing play that makes it.

Are you sure it was Dolphin and not Bagdad Bob??

"NOBODY turned us down, we made only one offer, and we got our man."

I hate Dolphin not just because he is the Hawks announcer but also because he's terrible to listen to if you actually care about the GAME you're trying to hear. It seems as though he's always on a tape delay even when he's live.

P.S. Some of you guys talking about getting goosebumps listening to that play really should be forced to void your ISU Fan Card Membership. The call makes me sick to my stomach thinking about how lucky they got. Not saying I wouldn't have loved it had I been an Iowa fan...guess I'm jealous.

Done, done, and done. I have called Iowa State and informed them that I shall be turning in my ISU Fan Card Membership and resigning, effective tomorrow. How DARE I enjoy something besides ISU athletics. For shame..... :no6xn:

"only offered 1 guy the basketball coach job".

They quite possibly did only offer it to one guy. But that's only because all of the coaches they really wanted to offer it to wouldn't take their call or had pre-emptively turned them down.

If Lickliter was the only choice why did they bother even contacting Pearl? I don't buy this. You don't form a search commitee when you only have 1 guy in mind.

Is it any concidence that Barta and Gomer Pyle look like twins?
