UH Cougars @ OU Sooners

This is exactly what I was thinking while watching the game. Why is OU showing so much?

Then I remembered.... oh that's right, they want to win the game.

CMC talked like he respected UNI as a football team all week, but truthfully had no respect for them and figured he could still win fairly easy without showing anything whatsoever on offense. Nearly backfired because UNI came in with confidence, no nerves at all, and played to win.... and nearly did.

I guess more of what I was thinking is that OU did not have to do this to win.....they did it as another poster said about NDSU philosphy to INDEED put crazy stuff on tape for other coaches to worry about and occupy practice time and resources with.....a lazy, conventional coach would think something along the lines of playing vanilla, only run some running plays to let Hurts get comfortable, run the ball down on Houston and win by 10 points, blah, blah blah...Boring! ..Hell, you got all summer to work on three or four crazy plays you may or may not have to worry about the rest of the year as you kick into a more demanding grind.

Like all first games, I draw few conclusions. Dana losing is always fun though. OU's defense is better. How much so, I'm not sure. B12 quarterbacks won't miss those passes that UH did early in the game. OU's offense was playing against a marginal defensive unit. OU's game at UCLA will give us a better view.
UCLA is probably worse than Houston...

UCLA looked awful last week.

Agree on first game stuff though. Iirc KSU had some bad opening days and went on to have nice seasons.

He has played for the Ultimate Task Master at Alabama and has 2 SEC Championship Rings, 1 NC Ring, 1 Peach Bowl Championship Ring, 1 Sugar Bowl Championship Ring and 1 Orange Bowl Championship Ring, and he was the SEC Offensive Player of the Year as a Freshman and SEC Championship Game MVP last year off the bench. Point is when he talks about playing to a standard, he is talking the talk, because he has walked the Championship walk. He wants Oklahoma to strive to the standard that he learned at Alabama not to cruise through a sloppy Regular Season and lose in the Semi-Final Bowl Game. I think he is being a great team motivator to never be satisfied (even after having an historic night) like he learned under Saban and wants Oklahoma to be BETTER than they have been and can be. That is SCARY. Holly Rowe is a pro, and she knows he was not being a douche bag. I say kudos to Jalen! He was something-something tonight, and he can be better!
Elevating OU’s “standard”? I don’t think Hurts has anything to do with how OU plays defense.

And having “played at a championship level” doesn’t mean he has all the passing skills to seamlessly fill Mayfield and Murray’s shoes. That’s why reasonable people were (and are) taking a wait and see approach.

He doesn't play defense, but attitude can be contagious. He spent 3 years with a program that knows how to win Championships and is obsessive about every aspect of how to do it.

I 100% agree that he is not anywhere near as good of a QB as Mayfield or Murray, but he sure had a helluva game last night. I suspect that he will have a solid year with ups and downs. Texas and Iowa State will be stern tests for him.

Time will tell.

OU “showed” so much because they can afford to. Duh.

Our offense has a grand total of four four star recruits on it—Hall, Brock. Scates and Foster (pardon me if I missed anyone). Not a single one of them are starting...yet.

OU’s offensive two deep might have four guys on it who weren’t at least four star recruits. Matter of fact, they might have as many five star recruits in their offensive two deep as we do four star.

They can afford to put it all on display, to let it all hang out. Because they have a significant talent margin over pretty much everyone they face.

ISU at this juncture? Not so much. We need to keep something in reserve. But give it a few more years under Matt Campbell, and we’ll be closer.
