Two missing girls

How long does it take to drain that size of a lake? I assume quite a while....

*Edit I see it could take 3 days.

Also how popular of a lake is this? Would someone see them get into the water?

It's right on a bike trail, and I think there's a bike trail there as well. It's not CVNT, as that runs through Gilbertville, but there is a bike path there.

I would think that someone would see them either enter the lake or get abducted, I'm not familiar with the area but how far away are roads from the point in which they found the bikes? I would think the further the roads are away from the place in which the bikes were found means that it is less likely that someone abducted them.

I-380/Highway 20 is about fifty feet from where the bikes would have been found. That's why a lot of people up here aren't sure the girls actually left the bikes there.

The lake is right next to highway 380 and people live along the lake. I think there is walking path around it.

On a different note: I had a classmate that caught 3-4lb piranha in this lake back in the early 90's?

This is going to sound really cold, but I'm curious since my first thought was that they were in the lake and not abducted.

Don't drowning victims typically surface in 4-5 days?

I know they could be caught under something and if they were my kids I'd want them to drain the Pacific Ocean they found my kids bikes next to it, but this doesn't seem very likely to lead to anything.

It seems as if the divers are pretty confident that there was nothing in the lake, however, they city wants to be 100% sure and the only way to make 100% sure is to drain the lake. As a parent I would want them to do the same thing, maybe they are just doing it to try to show that they are willing to do anything to find their children.

I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything but how the hell do you drain a lake? Pump all the water out?

My guess it was a river that was damed. They are just opening the dam all the way.

Sounds to me like it's an abduction... My theory is the kidnappers picked them up some other place, took the bikes/purse, and planted them fairly close to the lake... That way it could get confused with the drowning possibility and it would give them more time to make a getaway... Very sad either way, and I hope I'm not right...

At least if they were kidnapped there is still the chance of rescuing them. But with an abduction, there are unspeakable things that the girls could be used for that I worry about. Just a terrible situation.

They're pumping the lake into the tributary of the Cedar River, and it will likely be back-filled after pumping from it.

Agreed, its sad when the best case scenario (at least as far as chance of getting them back alive) is abduction. Otherwise theyre likely in the lake... or theyve been out lost in this heat without food or water the last few days, which could kill them as well.

Even though I don't have kids myself, and merely teach kids in this area, the public support that I've seen from the area has been amazing. Every city/town in the area between here and CR has been extending help to this, as well as the Iowa State Patrol, DCI, FBI, and the Missing Children's Center (or something like that). All of the news media in the area has been intense, and the FBI wants more posters and Billboards put up across the state. Even though I don't know these families, the support extended across the state/nation has been huge. As a community stakeholder, it's awesome to see this happening.

The arguments against an abduction are that A. Rarely does an abduction occur midday outdoors, and B. Even more rarely are two people involved, since one is likely to run for help.

Which is why the possibility that one fell into the lake--and the other went in after her. Then both were lost.
