'Twas The Night Before Kickoff 2010

"The pass was a duck because it was tipped,
And Simms jumped in and put the ball on his hip,
In a play reminiscent of Lamarcus Hicks,
The Clones win dramatically, on a freakin’ pick six!"

Priceless...Nice Job!

You looking for this? I received it as an email today.

'Twas the night before kickoff, twenty-eleven the year,
In silent locker rooms sat the next day's gear.
The helmets were polished, the jerseys hung neatly,
As the coaching staffs finished their game plans discreetly.

The last two games, were not even close,
As the Hawk defense picked off multiple throws.
The Hawks win again, was the expert analysis,
“We’re putting our money on ‘Team Rhabdomyolysis’!â€.

The players were snuggled, asleep in their cots,
In the D-lots the RV’s were claiming their spots.
The Jack, it was empty, except for some crew,
The natural field glistening with a coat of light dew.

When daylight arrived, on that Saturday morn,
The fans were all dreaming of the Trophy of Corn.
As the grills fired up, and the tailgates got started,
All knew that one fan base would leave broken-hearted.

The stadium filled with fans from both teams,
A sellout, with Jack Trice stretched at the seams.
The video board towered over the field,
As game time approached…..which team would yield?

Then the tornado sirens pierced the crisp Midwest air,
As Cyclone fans rose up out of their chairs.
The smoke began filling the field by the Jake,
The crowd in a frenzy, causing the bleachers to shake.

"Now Leonard, Now KO, Now Lenz and Shontrelle!
Go hit the field and give Iowa hell!
On AJ, On Benton, On Rump, Neal, and Knott,
Let's show the naysayers what ISU’s got!"

"To the flip of the coin,
To the kick of the ball!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!"

The captains met up at the white midfield strip,
And the visitors called tails and they win the flip.
The Cyclones would kickoff, and defend the south,
It’s now time for money, no more time for mouth.

The key chains were jingling, the cheers raised the roof,
As the kickoff went sailing off Mahoney’s right hoof.
The ball flew to Bullock, and the game had began,
A good return for the Hawks, to the 40 he ran.

The first quarter was ugly from a Cyclone fans’ view,
As Iowa scored not one TD, but two.
The Trice crowd was weary of a long day ahead,
But then momentum returned to the Cyclones instead.

James White found a hole and got loose for a score,
And a fumble by Coker helped the Cyclones even more.
That’s when State turned the game around like a wheel,
For the rest of the day belonged to the ‘Men of Steele’.

With Jantz under pressure came the play of the game,
He got outside the pocket as the Hawk pass rush came.
Running right he let go of a long pass to Horne,
A diving catch in the end zone, and new game was born.

It was tied at the half, said the Cyclotron screen,
Cyclones and Hawkeyes knotted up at fourteen.
When the third quarter started the Clones had the ‘skin,
And the offense was ready to go for the win.

A 13 play drive capped off by a run,
A touchdown by Woody, punched in from the one.
Then the defense took over, they were strong, they were stout
As they forced the Buzzards into a big 3 and out.

A field goal by Guyer made the Cyclone lead 10,
But the Hawkeyes weren’t done, as they scored again.
A long pass for a touchdown, the recipient, McNutt,
And the Cyclone offense then got stuck in a rut.

They punted away with 4 minutes remaining,
The game still in doubt, the tension….draining.
To the Cyclone 30 went the Hawks with the ball,
And with just seconds left, a field goal was the call.

Meyer lined up, for a 47 yarder,
In the end it would appear he should have kicked it much harder.
The ball flew toward the goal, it was high, it was far,
When ‘BOINK’ was the sound, when it hit the crossbar.

24 - 21 was the final tally,
As the Cyclone players and fans held a rally
The Hawk fans sadly headed out of the town,
As their message boards went into full blown meltdown.

The new CyHawk trophy, however it looks,
Stays in Ames, as this game is now in the books.
The Cyclone fans look now, to the next assignment,
It’s UCONN you fools, not realignment.

We fans take this game very seriously, folks,
There is hatred and pride and some good natured jokes.
But since ten years ago Sunday, our world’s not the same,
Let us never forget……football is only a game.

'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE KICKOFF'

'Twas the night before kickoff, in two-thousand and ten,
And the Cyclones and Hawks would do battle again.
The ‘experts’ were crowing, “There isn‘t a chance,
For the Cyclones to do the Cy-Hawk victory dance“.

The Hawkeyes were confident, and ranked very high,
And their fans saw the limit as only the sky.
But the Cardinal and Gold were a much improved bunch,
They show up to work with their hard hats and lunch.

The players were tucked away snug in their beds,
As the next day‘s game plans danced in their heads.
The Hawks had just feasted on ribs by the slab,
But Clayborn was late, he couldn‘t get a cab.

As game day arrived all the tailgaters kicked in,
Hollering loudly, “Let the party begin!â€
There was lemonade, iced tea and all different pops,
Hey, you didn‘t dare drink, there were too many cops.

Then the stadium filled, the one named after Nile,
The big game would begin in just a short while,
The rain, it had ended and the sun filled the sky,
As the mascots went at it, ol‘ Herky and Cy.

Both the teams hit the field, the Hawks in their swarm,
As Coach Herman got ready to outsmart old Norm.
Paul Rhoads led the Cyclones out on the field,
And their swagger said, “Iowa, we will not yield“.

"Now Arnaud, Now Franklin, Now A.J and Knott!
Let‘s give the Hawkeyes all that we got!
On Money, On Sed, On L.J. and Hicks,
Let‘s go toe-to-toe, and let‘s beat those ******!"

"To the flip of the quarter,
To the kick of the ball!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!"

The Cyclones called tails, and the coin flip agreed,
And the Hawkeyes would be the team using the tee.
It was Leonard who grabbed the opening kick,
With a return to the forty, he looked pretty slick.

The offense was clicking, just dunking and dinking,
And slowly the Hawk defense‘s heart began sinking.
This was not the new offense they had faced just last year,
No, this one was moving in a whole different gear.

Eleven plays later the Clones scored a TD,
15 fruitless quarters the streak would not be.
That first score was huge, to quiet the crowd,
But the Hawks would soon return them to loud.

Their first offensive series proved to be just as pretty,
as they scored and gave energy back to Iowa City.
It was 7 to 7 at the end of the first,
And now the ‘Big Game’ was fully immersed.

The second was quiet, as the defenses got tight,
Both kickers missed field goals, they were off to the right.
But just before halftime, the Cyclones would strike,
23 yards to Franklin, touchdown! , we like!

It was Cyclones by 7 as they went to the break,
And the Hawkeyes were starting to look like a fake.
When the third quarter began, the Hawks had the pig,
And they came out as sloppy as a three dollar wig.

It was Stanzi to Simms…that’s right, he’s a Clone,
but the Hawkeyes would hold ground inside the red zone.
The Cyclones would settle for an 18 yard kick
And Mahoney would boot it between the sticks.

It was 17-7 midway through the fourth,
As the Cyclones defended the goal to the North.
The Iowa offense would find it a groove,
And a touchdown by Hampton showed he could still move.

Now the lead is just three, and State has the ball,
But the game-winning drive would frustratingly stall.
A punt, then a play, and a TD…we thought,
But for pass interference, McNutt just got caught.

So a moderate field goal was the next play they would try,
If Mossbrucker would make it, the game would be tied.
He lined up from 40 and stared at the post,
And drilled it to give a big boost to the hosts.

OVERTIME! That’s what the announcers proclaimed,
Iowa State won the flip, and their defense was named.
The first play was a pass, Ricky to D.J.K.,
But Dutch got penetration, got a paw in the way.

The pass was a duck because it was tipped,
And Simms jumped in and put the ball on his hip,
In a play reminiscent of Lamarcus Hicks,
The Clones win dramatically, on a freakin’ pick six!

The Cyclone fans screamed, the Hawk fans were hushed,
Their delusional dream of a championship crushed.
It was the most amazing ending this series has seen,
Iowa State 23, Iowa 17

It’s a beautiful thing to beat the black and the gold,
It’s one of those things that will never grow old.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s just one of 12 games,
But the Cy-Hawk Trophy……it’s back home, in Ames.
