Trugreen

Good for her. Do it at your own risk. Some people, and animals, are built better to resist diseases IMO than others.

Just like the guy that smokes 2 packs of cigarettes a day and gets drunk every night and lives to 100 years old. Good for him, but that doesn't mean that anyone can do that and live to 100.

I'd rather not press my luck to find out I guess. But that's just me. Do what you want.

Oh, and of course everyone realizes how beneficial dandelions are for the environment too, right? It's better for us as a species to leave them alone than it is to get rid of them.

oh so you're saying its most likely genetically based not lawn chemicals.....

Why aren't fake, but realistic looking Astro turf lawns a thing yet? No cutting, no watering, no fertilizing? I'd do it in a heartbeat as long as it didn't look like old cyclone stadium/Brady bunch carpet turf.

Then there would be nothing to talk about in the off season.

pets and other animals, most likely

I prefer to not have anyone in my family, including my dog, to get cancer, so no, I don't use them or anyone else for that matter.

Humans are such interesting beings. Not always the smartest, but a very interesting study indeed.

Chemically dependent yards?

We've used them in CR for about 10 years, except for our grass turning green and having a thick lawn, they've been good.

Previous owner of our house used A+, but I canceled that before this spring. So far all I've done is put down the Scott's weed & feed + crabgrass preventer (albeit a hair too late). Grass is still green & thick, minimal crabgrass, & I've had to hand pick about 20 dandelions so far.

I don't have the best lawn on the block (that'd be the guy next door, figures), but I'd call it top 5 or so. I'll take that and the ~$250 I'll spend over spending $1,000+ any day.

Regarding dogs and lawns, I asked my vet about this. She told me that generally most fertilizers are safe once they're absorbed in the lawn. She said to avoid ones that have chemicals like carbamate and organophosphates. She also sent me these links that address it.

I haven't put anything down. Lawn is still pretty green, and while there are some dandelions, they don't really bother me and they're not taking over the lawn.

They are a thing in the southwest. Not supremely popular, but you'll see them on lawns here and there. I'm sure the ISU contingent can speak to pros/cons much more eloquently than I can, but the basics are the ecosystem "benefits" are essentially a wash, it's expensive and fake turf gets really hot in the sun. You already mentioned some of the positives and they're pretty easy to clean - you just rinse it off with a hose. A well installed fake lawn should last about 15 years, but if you go cheap you'll end up with a pile of trash. I've seen very nice ones, I've seen some that look awful.

Maintaining grass in the desert is quite a bit of work - you have to overseed every Novemberish, and you have to deal with Bermuda grass in the summer which is basically a nice looking weed. Fake turf is appealing and I have considered doing it at least on my very small patch of grass in the front yard. I feel like a clown dumping water on my yard in the desert even though I'm pretty conscious of my water usage.

I used to use Trugreen, was not happy with the results. I actually ended up going with A+, which is (or used to be) a sponsor on CF. A+ has been really good and is reasonably priced.

What makes dandelions such a bad thing in people's eyes? How was it that they ever became considered an eyesore in our eyes? Just curious.

They are a very important part of the ecosystem in reality. As I said earlier, it's just a very interesting study of human behavior why we do some of the things we do, that's all I'm saying. Why is it that we will do things that we know are not good for our species survival, all so that our lawns look "perfect". It's just interesting to me.

they charged me $100 for the first consultation a few years back. fast forward a season, i cancelled, and a month later decided to recommit. They came back out and charged me another $100 consultation fee as a "new customer". I didn't pay it and told them to stop contacting me.

We went with Wright Outdoor Solutions...they've come out once, so we haven't seen much for results yet. Our problem is the builder hired teenagers to lay our sod at 9pm at night the day before a massive rain storm. So our lot looks like crap compared to the rest of the neighborhood.

I'm all for using chemicals on the yard. Gives my pets X-Ray vision and allows me to be more efficient at work, you know, with the 3rd arm growing out of my forehead and all.

I had A+ come out for my irrigation start up. First time with them, and the guy was very knowledgeable.

Not the cheapest in town, but I was pleased with the level of service

Anyone in central Iowa use Trugreen? They've yet to show up at my house after calling 3 different times to tell me I was on the schedule the next day. Calling customer service does nothing because they are in a call center somewhere. I'd like to have a discussion with the Ankeny branch manager but have no idea who or how to contact. Thanks.

Rumors a few years ago in eastern Iowa that some lazy TruGreen guys that would run out of chemical during day would just find a hose and fill their tanks up with water. Lol

tough finding a good company. We've been thru 3-4 over the years and finally stuck with one
