Trip to Italy

I think this is very accurate. It's lovely, vaguely filthy, and SO confusing. But it's truly unique - and the cruise ships are killing it, so it really is an experience that we likely won't have for long at this rate.

What I will say is that our best experiences were in Murano and Burano. They're like basically little suburb islands off of Venice that are so colorful and unique. Murano is known for its glass, Burano for its lace - but in order to tour either of their factories, you are going to walk into a giant tourist trap. Just walking around each over the course of an afternoon/early evening is lovely.

I also timed our trip to Venice when Da Vinci's The Vetruvian Man was on display (it's usually kept vaulted due to aging), so there was a whole thing of Da Vinci's sketches, writings, and art. It was flooring how brilliant he was.
Also, there are no public restrooms, so you just pee into the water streets.

- The Holy Stairs - Scala Santa and Sancta Sanctorum - the stairs where Jesus had to carry up his cross while bleeding to meet Pilate, and the holy chapel of old popes. We were lucky enough to go when it was being restored and I could go up the actual stairs, not the protective layer. Went up on knees - in Catholic church, each of the 28 stairs gives you seven years of absolution. It's humbling if you're a Christian, but likely not worth it if you are not. It is also right next to Basilica of Saint John Lateran, which is beautiful - part of the ceiling is attributed to Michelangelo, and the Alter's cedar table is said to be the table from The Last Supper.
So these stairs were excavated from Jerusalem and brought to Rome?

Wait, Jesus did not carry the cross to his trial, he carried it to his Crucifixion I thought.

I added that in on my own in error, if you read the Wiki (or several articles).

There is an announcement in Scala Santa that basically says - I can't remember the exact words but there's the essence - "redemption and absolution doesn't come from climbing these stairs but from the deeds in our daily lives".

First time I climbed - I almost cried from the pain in my knees.....So painful. The second time, I was more prepared by bringing knee pads.

Speaking about absolution; there are 7 basilicas in Rome that if you visit them in a day, you'll get indulgences

Not true anymore. My old roommate was in Florence in January and there were no lines for anything; he said he could walk into the Accademia and see David with 5 other people in the room.

I am sure this is true of a lot of things now with the pandemic (and how it is treated/perceived differently in western Europe) - lines and crowds are much smaller.

Interesting. I hadn’t considered that the pandemic would have continued to effect tourism that much. Crazy.

Update here. We finally booked our flights to Rome and decided against Northern Italy/The Alps this trip but for sure will be going to Cinque Terre for a couple days so anyone that has any suggestions for there please let me know!

Always bring toilet paper or something similar. The hike around the towns are easy and beautiful. Some of the establishments make you pay to use the bathroom. Public restrooms were terrible and few.

Just enjoy it and drink lots of limoncello!
Ciao!

Good call on skipping the Alps. We've all heard what happens when they find a stranger there. Not pretty.

I agree too tho walking out of the train station and seeing the transition to the canals and boats was amazing.
On the other hand all I could think of while i was there was how rundown everything was.

Seriously, though, my brother had TDY in Italy about 4 decades ago and he said that Venice was the worst. Sounds like it hasn't gotten any better.

When I was in Rome there was often an attendant in the public restrooms and you paid something like 100 Lire (about 7 cents). The purpose was to keep the beggars out of the restrooms. Granted it was 1993 when I was in Rome,

It's also Rome so there are probably still some sidewalk urinals in the alleys. I know they were there in 93 and I don't think much has changed

Cinque Terre was probably my family's favorite stop in Italy. We started at the furthest south village and took a boat to the northernmost village then we walked/took the train back south. Some interesting churches and cemeteries to tour and panoramic views of the sea. And great food. One night we got a pizza and a bottle of wine and walked down to the marina to watch the sunset. Absolutely breathtaking. I would also recommend watching the Rick Steves episode that would give you the cliffs notes version of what each village has to offer. Wear comfortable clothes and enjoy! Anyone have any ideas/suggestions for going to Italy? We are going on a cruise starting in Rome and going to Greece but we want to spend a few days prior to the cruise in other parts of Italy. I'm thinking we're settling on the Turin area because I want to see the Alps.

Anyone been to Turin? Suggestions?

Thoughts on cheaper flight deals on Delta? Are there other cites in the EU that are cheaper to fly into than say Rome or Milan or Turin?

Thanks!

I've heard Rome is neat.

Don't drink too much wine the night before hiking those trails. You'll end up sweating it all out.

My wife and I will be flying into Zurich and traveling with the parents of our exchange student from Germany the 2nd week of May. We will be there for 2 weeks and making our way from Zurich to the Amalfi Coast and back to Zurich. This is our first time to Italy so I will post an update after our travels. Lots of good information in this thread and I am looking forward to our trip!
