Anyone have any ideas/suggestions for going to Italy? We are going on a cruise starting in Rome and going to Greece but we want to spend a few days prior to the cruise in other parts of Italy. I'm thinking we're settling on the Turin area because I want to see the Alps.

Anyone been to Turin? Suggestions?

Thoughts on cheaper flight deals on Delta? Are there other cites in the EU that are cheaper to fly into than say Rome or Milan or Turin?

Thanks!

I think prices are up most places right now. Wifey just booked a flight to London for this spring on American and it was $1,300.

Never been to Rome but it's at the top of my list, enjoy.

I've done Venice - it's lovely as an experience that is rapidly fading away, but I've done Rome twice and enjoyed it far more. If you need any info on Rome, @dahliaclone , let me know and I can get you a gigantic list of "cool and weird **** to see and do in Rome."

Those are my only two cities I've done in Italy, so I'm no help on Turin.

I've been to Italy 3 times and like Angie, Rome is a highlight. So many things to do by just walking around. I did 2 days in Venice and would probably skip it all together if I had to do it over again. We had a lot of fun in the Bologna area and renting a car allowed us to see a lot of non touristy places. Having said that, we did not drive in Rome and I would never recommend driving in any of the large cities in Italy. It sounds like you have a limited amount of time so I'd recommend staying in Rome. You can also do day trips via rail to places like Orvieto, which is also very cool.

As far as flights, it really depends. We've flown into both Rome and Milan but both times had to go through CDG.

Rome is awesome. Florence is nice, but VERY touristy for a small town, Venice is cool, but I wouldn't stay overnight there. Pisa is cool for a few hours... go into town and see the leaning tower, then leave. Milan is nice if you are into fashion.

Bottom line is if you only have a few days, Rome is where you want to go.

Would love thoughts on cool and weird!

If you’re into soccer at all and depending on what time of year you will be there, you could try to catch a Juventus match in Turin. Not only are they one of the traditional power clubs in Italy and also Europe, they have a US kid who is kicking ass for them in their midfield, Weston McKennie.

Haven’t checked but it’s usually cheaper to fly into London or Frankfurt. From there you can fly anywhere in Europe for cheap ($200<). Florence is to be recommended, Cinque Terre is not far from Turin by train. If you’re traveling in May or later, the Alps on the French/Italian border are grand and less visited than some other areas.
Tuscany is wonderful, prettier in person than the pics you see. Have fun and send me a pm if you need more info. We had a daughter live overseas so we were able to travel to Europe many times.

Rimini is beautiful place on the Adriatic sea. It is just a few miles from the nation of, Republic of San Marino. Our Italian friends said they are an independent country that relies on Italy for everything.:)

I usually use Skyscanner for flight quotes. Just did a sample for 4/5-4/21
Frankfurt from Denver. $505 round trip non stop on Lufthansa which we like. Italy (and most of Europe for that matter) is just enchanting. Have fun.

Have just been in Turin for short trips. Nice and close to a lot of quaint places. Milan is cool if you like big cities and Genoa is a nearby port not far away. We usually like smaller places but whatever you’re into. If you can do it Florence is amazing. The main museum there (Ufizi?) has some of the most famous paintings you would ever see. Botticelli and Van Gogh and on and on.
We’ve found Italians very helpful and have had just wonderful experiences. Check into VRBO, Abnb, and agriturismos (rural stays) if you are going to be in one place for an extended (several days) period.
Again, good luck.
Just read your follow up post. September will be fantastic and a lot less crowded. Last time we were there, was in early October and we had no problems with crowds.

We went at the end of October 2019. Best parts we thought were Rome (food was amazing) and Amalfi Coast. We stayed in Rovello off the coast and the view was amazing, very relaxing. We went to Venice, and while some things were neat to see as they could be gone someday, it wasn't worth the hype.
