Transfer Portal Targets

If Max Duggen entered the portal. What is everyone's thoughts on bringing a local kid in for his final season or two to compete with Dekkers?

I think they go for a Kolar type QB if any. Seem pretty set with Dekkers and Cook/ Becht coming in.

If Duggen transfers, the kid is good enough where he can go someplace in desperate need of a QB and doesn't have to compete at all for a job. I can't say that would be the situation here at all.

You fix problems with the portal. If you bring Dugan in to play QB it means you aren’t comfortable with Dekkers. A solid QB who will play second fiddle if Bouman leaves or changed position, definite possibility. If Bouman stays, then it shouldn’t be an area to address.

Even with Ant returning for his COVID year.. I'd love to go get another proven corner as it remains a bottom tier room in the program

S, DL

RB, WR, QB, TE

OL, CB

I'd rank the 2022 tiers (from what we know right now) as:

Top (not worried/optimistic) :
S, DL, RB

Middle (expecting average, or above average but depth is an issue):
LB, TE, CB, QB

Bottom (not optimistic, need players to make big leaps or transfers):
OL, WR

Each group has its own reasons for being in each tier.

I do t think Dugan is going anywhere

I forgot LB. If put that in the middle tier as well. I was also close on putting the RB group on tier one just based on Campbell's track record with backs. I was close to putting WR down low. But that group just wasn't given opportunity with our TE room getting the targets, Hutch catching 10 a game and the OL being poor at giving Purdy time

Curious to hear your thoughts on CB being higher.

I think purchase and Tampa have the size and ability to be significant upgrades over Datrone Young and Tayvon Kyle at least in coverage. Young was really good in the run game. The problem is they're young and inexperienced. And I've yet to see anyone other than Johnson make a good play on the ball on a deep throw. They're almost always in position to make a play on the ball which is great, but it's been too easy.

All that said, I see the group (since AJ is coming back) as better than average and there's even hope that they can be really really good. Depth and experience are both a little less than good, but not horrible either.

Good points. Losing Young will be addition by subtraction in the pass game. Purchase could be elite. I don't see it with Tampa. But the staff sure talks him up. So a big off season could do him wonders

Talk about players the staff has raved about, it will be interesting to see what Dean does next year with Charlie gone.

Yes, I think I remember reading on this board that a coach said he could be the best tight end here, but has he appeared in a game this year? Realizing the experience we had at TE ahead of him, of course.

I'd include LB in there too on a wishlist. Hopefully Colby Reeder from delaware picks us over rutgers and kansas state. Seems like a bonafide starter, which is what you want obviously.
