I believe our culture will be more protective than most. A lot of our guys could have went for the paychecks after last year, but came back because they wanted to do something special together.

This is just beginning. And going to a blue blood for a few 100k is much easier than making a roster on the NFL. We lose a Purdy, Hall and Rose as sophomore's, this season will have taken on an entire new outlook. I can't imagine after his first 2,000 yard season had an Alabama came after Troy Davis with a huge bag of money him saying "no......I love ISU and Danny Mac". I repeat......this is only beginning.

This sums me up pretty well. I support the players being able to make money off their NIL in a legitimate way, they should absolutely be able to do that. I am just not sure that there is a great system for doing this where the NIL stays legitimate and doesn't turn into teams bidding for the best players through their donor network.

Sounds like you were worried they'd corrupt the new "system" which took about 10 seconds.

Boy, this NIL sure is going to be the death of college football. I liked it better a year ago when schools weren’t trying to poach and/or pay players…….

I think CFB and college sports budgets in general are due for a massive overhaul.

D1 coaches are due for salary cuts…I can’t come to peace with the fact Nick Saban is making $10M a year to coach student-athletes or whatever they call kids taking easy majors which pass as an education in order to focus on football.

Facility upgrade wars should slow down as well and we should see most college sports on the highest level see budget cuts. There is a higher minimum entry fee to compete in even Olympic sports which is why Iowa built the new state of the art aquatic center and tennis courts which are now going to be absent the swimming team and Men’s tennis team which is so stupid. That trend can and should be reversed.

I think it's a pretty big leap to say paying players for NIL will lead to the destruction of college football. It's going to change some of the recruiting and player retention dynamics but college football isn't going away.

I was just responding to someone who thought it eventually would. There will always be college football. Most here have live through Walden, Danny Mac and PR. My wife's nephew played DII. I go every Friday to watch games at my kids high school. If that's enough...just entertainment...then this isn't going to be that big of a deal to you. If you would like to keep what CMC has tried to build....winning at a major level.....this entire thing might present a problem.

Exactly. "It'll destroy college football!" is pure hyperbole, and anyone who says it with a straight face should be laughed at. Will it change college sports? Of course. But this is just a continuation of the path that it's been on for a long time now. The big money arms race is nothing new, and the stuff that Gary is whining about is just an extension of it. Purity and parity are nothing but buzz words. They don't exist in college sports and haven't for many many years.

This entire conversation is predicated on a 5 star being poached, correct? CMC and staff are good, and chances are they will be successful where ever they go. But he recruits a 5 star stud, and then all of a sudden they pull out and end up at Alabama........how are they going to adapt to that every year? And what then will be the definition of success? Personally I like playing for the conference titles and don't miss the days of Paul's hard hats and Danny Mac's historic 3rd quarters. Now maybe with OU and UT gone, we will still be able to play for the top with everyone in our conference being poached just like us. I don't know. And if that's okay with everyone then I would submit CMC will not be here much longer because he comes across as someone who isn't satisfied with just being "successful".

I agree with this in a way. But I look at what's happened to college wrestling with realignment and the Big10 financial superiority. You essentially have two levels where the Big10 is dumping so much money into facilities that no one outside the conference can compete for team titles. So you still have regional interest for your school, but it just isn't the same as it was.

Oh, I'm sure there will be a little bit of chaos, but hiring a mercenary band for a team will have its share of issues for those teams as well.

I think allowing players to make money of their NIL is probably the right thing to do. I'm not one of those people pissing themselves about exploitation or anything. Or at least if people are going to be freaking out about players being exploited they need to have the balls to name specifically who has really been getting rich off the kids - the coaches. So unless you are will to say Matt Campbell is exploiting kids at Iowa State, I don't really respect that opinion. Being a college football player is still a choice, and for a lot of people it's a pretty good deal. And people like to throw out the exploitation accusation as if there's some old white man with a monocle at the "NCAA and these schools" making tens of millions off these kids, when it's overwhelmingly the coaches cashing in.

But in the end I just don't think running an industry that is highly dependent on people while putting severe limits to their ability to cash in on their own value is right.

And I think a result of that is eventually going to greatly diminish the popularity of college football. I don't like it, but I think that's the way it's going to be.

So I don't think destroying college football is the right thing to do. I think it is probably the end result of doing the right thing. But who knows, this is just a guess by a dummy on the internet.

If one thinks that NIL is going to destroy college football, and one wants college FB to survive, why on earth would one support NIL?

The fallacy, of course, is that college athletics needed/needs NIL and pay-for-play. It didn't/doesn't. But now we have it, and we have a pretty good glimpse of where it is going...

That already exists, though. The striation between Power 5 vs Group of 5 is massive. That division isn't new, but the position of schools may change.

I want to ensure the health of college football in the decades to come."

College football is definitely changing. This is a huge opportunity for those teams that can adapt early to the new landscape. Those that are innovative will do well. Of course deep donor pockets will also help but that **** has been going on behind closed doors for a long time. Hopefully ISU can take advantage of the new rules, I don't know that they are or not.

I trust the current coaching staff and the culture they've developed to limit player defection. If players start leaving in mass, then obviously the coaching staff has some issues to work out.

Facilities arms races? No worries.
No parity with only the same few teams dominating recruiting and having a legitimate shot at a title? That's great!
