Trading Cards Thread

My kids are into it now and I've never collected so I'm blown away at how much some cards are worth and how little some other cards are worth. My kids just want the jersey cards.

There is a signed Deonte Burton card at a card shop near me that I am probably just going to buy to look at. Loved that guy.
 
I've got a bunch of basketball cards probably from mostly the 1990's but some older including a Dr. J card that I knew was valued around $50 over 20 years ago. Just all sitting in boxes in my basement for now. Have no idea what some of the better cards like my Jordan's would be worth. If I ever get bored enough may buy a price guide and pull them out of storage and see if any are worth trying to sell. Figure the longer I hold onto them the best ones will only become more valuable over time right?
 
I was huge into baseball cards when I was a kid, which is also the early 90s when they made so many that they are all pretty much worthless. The only really good card I ever got in a pack was a Topps Gold Derek Jeter draft pick card that's worth something. Otherwise did lots of wheeling and dealing to get a couple good ones like the Griffey Upper Deck rookie, Puckett and Bonds rookies. Otherwise I went all in and traded to get as many Albert Belle cards as I could get. I was banking on him being in the hall of fame.

Despite the fact I probably wasted hundreds of dollars, I have some great memories geeking out with friends.

My best buy ever when my wife and I were in an antique shop in Marquette, IA and I bought a Bob Gibson 1963 Fleer for $2. Very random - it was just sitting there on a shelf with all sorts of random stuff.

I just got auto patch cards of Montgomery, Lazard and Butler in the last couple of months. They are all similar to this one. The Monty is probably my favorite card. Mine isn't exactly like this one...mine has "Loyal" in place of ever. They made 5 cards out of the patch. the only problem is now, I need all 5 cards to get the entire patch lol

I also try to collect Olympic cards and extreme sports. The baseball market was flooded in the early 90s, which killed the market, but brought rise to a bunch of other sports cards!

I've got Aaron's Topps rookie card.
 
My mom was going through some of my old stuff a while back and stumbled on this bad boy (I'm showing you the online version since I'm not smart enough to take a picture and upload mine...):

I should send it in to PSA to have it graded. When I look online the values seem all over the place so I'm not even sure where to begin on putting a value on it.

Topps didn’t have a license. In fact there hadn’t been a basketball set in about 5 years when the 1986 fleer set came out. This resulted in the set having rookie cards nearly every 80’s great ( MJ, Ewing Malone Olajuwon Dominique Barkley Mullin Isiah Drexler)
My brother bought those 86 fleer packs at the grocery store. 3 packs for a $1. He used to put the stickers on our wall and dressers. He had 5 Jordan stickers on his dresser. He was about 6 years old and beat them all up.
These cards didn’t sell much in the stores. They were mass produced like crazy. Stores couldn’t sell them and a lot of product was just thrown in the trash

Wow. I actually called a shop in The Moines a month or so ago and he said they've put a hold on sending cards out for grading because they're upwards of a year out in terms of getting stuff back. Thanks, Covid.

Mine's got some faint creases happening but it's been under glass in a little plaque deal for years. I know nothing about grades or what grade it might be. I figured it might be worth $1k at most.

I pulled my Jordan RC as an 8 year old in a pack from our small town grocery store, it spent 4 years at the bottom of a toy box before 12 year old found it and realized what it actually was. It's in brutal shape but I've had it graded, it will still fetch a pretty penny.

No idea. I know the Fleer is the one they say has the most value. I think my brother got it for a few bucks. We were teenagers and didn't spend more than that on each other for Xmas. I think I got him a comb.

I've seen guys who are putting a collection of every grade 1-10, the cards that get 1-4 are actually a bit tougher to find because no one thought to get them graded.

Grading is ridiculous right now, you either have to have a huge lot to send in, pay a bunch for an expedited grading or find a 3rd party who takes in singles cards from people and sends them in as a group lot to get them back quicker. I know people that have been waiting on cards since June. I have a couple dozen I'm looking to send in but the cost and slow turnaround are holding me back.

Mostly, I collect just what I like (Giants and A's, along with favorite players from other teams), going for quantity over 'quality' (cards of any particular value). If I happen to find some stuff worth more than a dime, then that's great. I try to hit sports card shows when they come to North Grand Mall. I'll find the vendor who has the most boxes of cheap commons and sit until I've gone through them all. One time, I walked away with 425 cards (and somehow only duplicated about a dozen of cards I already had). I've found stuff on eBay before, but not frequently. It's a fun side-hobby, though. I enjoy sorting them when I buy a bunch at a show and then organizing them into what I already have. Most stuff goes into binders.
