Top Five Ames Restaurants

Ames has the best food in the state of Iowa.

Hickory Park, Battles, Dublin Bay, Wallaby's, Legends, Great Plains.

I'll have to disagree with you there. Ames has the best single restaurant, Great Plains, but both Des Moines and Iowa City have much better all-around dining options.

This is solely based on what I look back on and really miss about Ames since I've moved away.

1. Lei's Vietnamese. FANTASTIC! Huge meals for dirt cheap, and the wontons are a MUST.
2. Flying Burrito. Although I've found the chain Chipotle to be pretty close in comparison.
3. Great Plains. For lunch I'd always walk down and buy the pizza by the slice.
4. Luccalans. Great Italian.
5. Okaboji Grill.

Wow, only 3 Old George's votes?
5. Jack Trice parking lot (does tailgating count?)
4. Old Chicago
3.Old Georges
2. Pizza Pit
1. Hickory Park (what an original choice...)

I don't think anyone has mentioned Pokey Sticks from Gumby's Pizza. Great food when drunk and rewarmed the next morning.

I had probably the worst meal I ever ate at Cafe Northwest (at the old location) 5-6 years ago. London broil, awful...

My favorites were:

1. Battles
2. Great Plains
3. La Fuente (I have numerous t-shirts from there)
4. Dublin Bay
5. Hickory Park (takeout only, an incredible value. I'm not into the lines there).

Also, I highly recommend the 2 lbs inferno wings from pizza pit. I never had this in school, but was introduced to them via my brother... They are a test to your manhood. They burn going down and coming out...
