Recently I was talking to my buddy about haircuts and he could not believe I don't tip them...so I was wondering do most people tip their hairstylist?

Along with the tipping thread the other day, this one doesnt make a lot of sense to me either. You're paying for the service (unlike food where its 'billed for the food, tip for the service'). Unless the service was exceptional, why should there be a tip? Charge more if the 'standard' price isnt enough. I usually add a couple bucks to the receipt, but i dont like that its become expected.
Its a service, they aren't getting paid $20/hr to cut your hair. It's just like tipping a bartender or a server...which I would hope you actually do.

Just like at a restaurant, if the they do a good job, I tip. Usually 3 bucks where I get my hair cut, makes it an even 20.
I always tip because I go back to the same girl every time for my haircut and she always does a great job...haircut is $45 and I tip between 12-15 bucks. She takes her time and cuts exactly how I Want it. I had some bad haircuts right before I found her so I appreciate her and I show it with a decent tip.

If I find someone who does a good job, and I continue to go back to them I usually give a five dollar tip.
Holy cow, I can't imagine dropping $60 on a haircut. That's approaching the Steve Alford hair care budget. Where do you go?
They may not be getting 20/hr, but theyre not getting below minimum wage either, like servers often are.
If its not enough, charge more, be honest with your prices, instead of just expecting a tip (which was supposed to just be for exceptional service)

Yeah, same here. My haircut takes about 5 minutes and runs me $11, I toss in an extra buck as a tip mainly because I have had the same barber since I left Ames (and had Monty my whole time in Ames, did the same for him).
I usually stick to the 20% thing
EDIT: Except for that once I stopped in at a quick haircut place just cuz i needed one on the way out of town and the asian lady effed it up bad. Seriously? Short guys haircut...not hard at all. As Dr. Evil would say "Pretty standard really..." No tip for her.

Chicago is expensive...by the time I am done I am there for an hour, you get a neck, hand/arm, and shoulder message...and a couple hair washes before and after the cut...not a cheap haircut by any means but I don't mind paying it
