Time for Two Posts?

In theory, I agree with most of this. If the other team plays big or crashes offensive glass, playing two bigs could be something you at least spend a few minutes looking at. Depends on matchups as well. With that said, by and large, most teams at the p5 level would victimize a team using two bigs - particularly our bigs. None of Jacobson, Solo or Lard have the lateral ability to stick with athletic 4s or 3s.

As for defense, KenPom has us as the 25th best defense in the country and that significantly outperforms our talent level.

My biggest Prohm complaint is out-of-timeout plays. That's pretty ticky-tack though. I've been happy with the defensive progress.

In the words of Fred Hoiberg, "They have to guard us too." Jacobsen would be fine on the perimeter in the offense but I would prefer a lot of other guys first.

Lard was better last year with Young, but I’d rather see more of Talley than another big forward (assuming Young hasn’t added outside shooting, which he may have).

That said, just because we have a small lineup, doesn’t mean we’re playing good small-ball.

@Chitowncy Jacobson, Young, and Lard are all serviceable posts, but I think you have to also consider who is that taking minutes from....a talented, deep group of guards & wings.

I do not see many situations where ISU is in a better position to win a game with 2 posts playing in the lineup. The only way it works is if one of our post players is a "+" defender against a guard and has some guard skills....I don't see that. Also, It is pretty much antithetical to how the current roster is constructed.

If we see 2 posts it is because we are losing a game and literally throwing up whatever lineup sticks at that moment. In that case I think these would be the best combinations from best to worst, but it is probably not a good sign if we even see it:
1. Jacobson - Lard
2. Jacobson - Young
3. Lard - Young

So, we have a proven concept that fits our roster, but we should try something that our guys don't fit well just to see how it goes..
Speaking of changing proven concepts, we did sit Haliburton for the last 4 minutes against Baylor. We don’t really know if Jacobson-Lard or Jacobson-Young do not fit more than we knew the stagnant fit of Wigginton-Shayok-THT.

I’d rather play good small-ball, but we’re just starting to learn about this group and given the rebounding struggles and stretches of low quality small-ball play, there’s merit in tinkering.

It seems like we dont use Shayok in the 4 spot on defense while we use THT but he's not quite to the point of being tough like say Ejim yet so it doesnt work nearly as well for defense and rebounding. I totally get the perspective of trying different things. Whats strange is that we have Talley that could fit the bill for 5-7 minutes a game. What Im interested in is the offensive side how do we take advantage of our potential mismatches? It doesnt seem like we do as its almost a 5 out with a screen-er so how do who ever take advantage of using Shayock or THT to fill the roll of how we used Clyburn or Ejim in midrange? Taking advantage of someone who is slower or shorter on a 4 is our bread and butter this past decade.

I really only see this happening if we're really struggling at defending another team's bigs inside, or really struggling on the boards. If that is the case, I think it's Jacobson at the 4, and Lard or Young at the 5.

This. And playing 1 post gives them the luxury of fouls to give for the bigs.

Young, Lard, MJ, Conditt and Shayok.

Just let it all happen.

Not all 6'10", Don't want. ;)

Seriously though, I get the thought of lineup changes after a loss but I don't see ISU utilizing 2 bigs as a major roster set at all this season. Prohm has been talking about his desire to play small with this team all summer and having 4 ball handlers on the floor at all times. Like it or not Prohm usually takes the steady long term approch to the season in order to have ISU playing the best at the end of the year and that is small. ISU's strength is it long guards that are able to switch defensively and move the ball on the perimeter. Taking out one of ISU's G/F for Lard/Young next to Jacobson would hurt the spacing due to taking one more shooter off the floor.

If there is a lineup change I would think Wigginton being inserted back into the starting lineup. Prohm wasn't going to make that change until the previous starting lineup had difficulties and that could have been Baylor. Wigginton may be one of the players who it may make a difference if he a starter in name or not and get him comfortable back in a familiar role.

I’d like to see it tried more. Sometimes during games our rebounding is atrocious. Lard was so good around the basket offensively last year and apparently Jacobson has been known to be a good rebounder. But, Prohm knows what he’s doing. If the guards just rebounded better I wouldn’t care at all.
