Throwback Thread: COACHING SEARCH: Wednesday, Nov. 25 evening update

Count me in the group that prefers to NOT see a thread titled coaching search suddenly pop up in the forum. Shame shame on you.
Couldn't agree more. I was eating lunch at my desk and saw this thread come up on the football forum.

Reminds me of the MBB thread when LE was fired. I don’t think the candidates then are still coaching these days

"--- One source says there is “pretty much no chance” that Iowa State will hire a youngster like Kendal Briles or Lincoln Riley."

Pro tip - don't use that source again.

Interesting bump. Today is the 2 year anniversary of the Rhoads KSU debacle, which was made apparent by my Twitter and Facebook memories. Fun to look back on it now because the program is in such a better place (partly b/c of that historic collapse), but at the time I was pretty sure I had myself convinced I never wanted to watch another down of Iowa State football again.

I've seem Buffalo play and they are nothing to write home about, that would blow up in Pollard's face. I've said it for 3 months I believe Matt Campbell would be our next coach if Rhoads was fired, heard he was interested in ISU for quite some time and that's from a relative in the athletic department.

I think the best part about CF is seeing these threads appear.

I’ll say that I’ve never bought the whole Campbell came to ames and loved it line because it seemed too perfect, but this post makes me think there’s some truth to it.

On the other hand, there’s an article posted pages back where he talks about coaching at Toledo like he does here and he left there a few weeks later. Hope we have our best offer ready for him.

Who would have guessed that many of the names the CF experts wanted would have flamed out in 2 years.
I wonder what the average tenure for a D1 football coach honestly is. Seems like most coaches are just trying to prolong their firing.

Sure, Campbell is young, but he wasn’t a coordinator with zero head coaching experience. They’re not in the same category.

Yeah I wasn't sure if he was driving at Oklahoma promoting Lincoln Riley or that he thought Campbell was similar to those two.

We will hire a Head Coach. NO Coordinators. It will be a head coach. Count on it. I really don't think we go after the Navy Coach. Just don't see it. I see Pollard.......and Leath.....making a push for Matt Campbell. Campbell was the one of the youngest coordinators ever in FBS. And was named an FBS head coach in 2011. And he is only 35 years old.

Hiring Campbell would give some excitement to the fan base. The guy is a winner. Period. He understands the importance of "culture". He is young and is a great recruiter. IMO, this is a home run hire.

Fritz does not even have any Juco's in Georgia Southern's current class. Neither does Campbell. IMO, Juco's are used to fill in for positions of immediate need. Maybe they do not need the Juco's. IDK.

At any rate, the present class for Toledo ranks #62. And Georgia Southern is #75. And ISU is ranked # 80 at this time.

Last year the rankings were Toledo #69....Iowa State #71......and Georgia Southern #93. And Georgia Southern did not sign any Juco recruits.

So it looks like Campbell is able to at least recruit as good or better than us to a MAC school. I would not necessarily worry.

Fritz is my second choice. I think he is okay. Nothing wrong with him. IMO, Matt Campbell could be something special. I would roll the dice with him. The guy is only 35 years old. He was the second youngest coordinator several years ago. And then became the youngest head coach in FBS. I just think that he could take us to the next level. And is the type of coach that fans could get really excited about.

We would fill the stadium next year.

Since I'm somewhere near the driver's seat of the Campbell bandwagon, I agree Monken's ability to turn SoMiss around is incredibly enticing and shows he at least has the ability to get a program moving. I don't watch much C-USA so I haven't seen SoMiss play but given Monken's pedigree I assume he'll want to implement OSU's offense here. I just don't believe it's going to work. Look at what Holgo went through at WVU after joining the Big XII. He's got WVU pounding the rock, at that's what they'll have to do to be successful. Now...if Monken is really a great offensive mind he'll be able to maximize the talent he has in place and hopefully see the recipe it takes to have success on offense here (again, I don't think it's trying to be OSU/Baylor...it won't work).

One of the things that is very exciting to me about Campbell is he's been an OL coach in the upper midwest for years. He knows where he can get linemen in Ohio/Michigan/Minnesota and what a good frame looks like to build on for building a power/read-option running attack. Can he get them here? I don't know, but he at least has connections with high school coaches up here.

Stormin- i agree totally. I like fits, but the more I read about Campbell the more I'll be upset if it isn't him who we hire. He sounds too good. I hope pollard gets this right!,

Yeah, not sure on that one. I'm pretty happy we didn't give Kendal Briles any money.

Lincoln was very unproven. Hot name and talented playcaller, but who knows if he could handle a rebuilding job.

He's doing great with OU, but he had the job handed to him by Stoops, so they kind of had to trust him there.

Also, who knows if Stoops had previously talked to RIley about his future. He might have turned us down knowing OU would come open in the future.

we should totally hire Toledo's Matt Campbell. Guy is a proven winner, can make more with less, will improve our recruiting, and is a "program" and "culture" type of guy. Not only that, but he has roots to Ohio where some of the best Midwest talent is from. I would not be surprised to see him pull stud RBs from the Ohio area and keep that pipeline open. At Toledo he definitely kept a close-knit group of assistants, so I'd bet he'd bring most of them here.

do I win?
