thoughts on game tonight

Well, I doubt there is a player on Marquette that CJL would offer a scholarship to. We have tons of talent, almost everyone back.
There might be one or two.

Coach does a lot of early season training for the long haul that leads to tight matches with "lesser talented teams." But are we being out-coached? Watching the North Dakota match too it seemed there was several focused attempts at setting up situational advantages that worked for UND. Certainly we adjusted to the short line up of UND but had no answer for Marquette's using their strengths against our weaknesses.

If you want to get this fan's ire up, start criticizing CJL. She is the #1 target to be the new Nebraska coach when Cook retires so smarter volleyball people than populate this forum consider her highly talented and capable. This kind of chatter only makes it easier for Nebby to snap her up when the time comes - so give it a break. I won't go into the things she has done, is doing and will do, but there are lots of fans that wish they had someone half as good as Christy coaching their team.

And for heaven's sake, this is the first t'ment of the season. We have more talent than we have ever had in my time as a fan, so of course it will take time to sort it out.

Nuff said on this topic.

For what it's worth, based on this weekend's play, it seems to be that have great front row talent ad multiple options going forward. We have a great libero. We have a great coach. What we do not yet have is 1) consistent setting (a lot of our problems hitting this weekend was due, in part, to inconsistent setting - but this will get better, and 2) challenges in the back row, with some poor passing, which led to poor setting.

With the new faces and multiple options, it will take time for this team to gel - and become proficient. I believe we will be a much different team midway through the season than we are now. And as a big VB fan, I am perfectly fine with this.

Two "phenomenal" things here:
1. The old fashioned "critics are stupid" idea.
2. The old "criticism will lead the person away" idea. Does CFL actually read CF? If she makes the call to leave someday, it won't be due to the board.

Of course not.

But I do find it funny that there are so many college volleyball experts on here. I would bet that 90% of us didn't pay any attention to college volleyball until Christy showed up and suddenly we were relevant nationally. And so many people seem to expect perfection and seem to think that they know exactly how to get there.

Oh well, in a few weeks we will all be focused on our football team anyway.

not me!

While I do think some of the criticism/freaking out is excessive for the first weekend, CJL herself said she would like to have things far more figured out than she does at this point. To me the big thing is what system we are going to run. 6-2 has never been a great system for us and though it's supposed to help blocking (another consistent weakness) it did not seem to add that benefit this weekend. But she may feel that sitting Remi for a year gives far great advantages next year. I think if the 5-1 decision is made, those players will quickly fall into place. If 6-2 is the decision, it's finding the right hitters/combos as well as who can rotate through the back row to not chew up so many subs. Vondrak actually seemed to do well back there. Kuhrt seemed to have more trouble. And bad serve receive/passing hurt us a lot when our setters are good but not top of the class. The other point is Capezio is usually very good backrow as well and we didn't have that this weekend.

I have faith in CJL, it may just be a bumpy few games until it gets figured out.

Well gee, I watch games with a former college volleyball player who was the captain of his Big Ten squad, and is now on the faculty at Iowa State.
He says the team just doesn't put forth the effort - doesn't work as hard - as the top teams do - point by point. He suspects it's not demanded. So I'll think I'll take his word over yours...

Upset fans posting their dismay are mad at the outcome, not always the coach and least of all with the team. It shows they are investing emotionally (financially too) in supporting them.

I doubt there is a coach out there who believes they are above criticism, Would you want one who believe such?

Why not meltdown over volleyball? Unlike the football team, our volleyball program is respected. Getting broomed on our home court by an unranked team is unacceptable.

While getting swept at home by an ok team shouldn't be acceptable around here anymore, I will give a hat tip to the fight the team managed to muster in the 3rd set Saturday night. When ISU was down 16-3, they managed to come all the way back, eventually falling 26-24. That takes some guts and determination.

It was impressive. Definitely showed they don't quit.

Or take the Coaches word. Her post-game comments included (among a number of things) noting the effort was not there point-by-point except during that last big run.

She is maybe the only coach at ISU that I actually listen to in post-games. I usually find her comments pretty candid and informative and not just the usual coach-speak sound bites. Haven't really read anything here in the line of criticism that wasn't mentioned by her also.

I saw a lot more of the same. I came away pretty unimpressed. Was hoping to see something different. CJL admitted she didn't have them ready, and I don't think she did. Everybody loves her as a recruiter, not going to even fight that. But, you have to make the tough calls on players and playing time. She's too much of a player's coach. She wants to make everybody happy, and you can't. A lot of preparation has been accomplished, I would hope we have a better (and tougher) identity next time out.

Why don't we broadcast the intra-squad scrimmage? My opinion, it's too easy to scout, and we can't overcome it.

And it was tied at 24 (although I guess it would have to be to get that final score). Incredible comeback.

The tough decisions need to be made. While Vondrak has been a fan favorite and not always recognized for her talent, she had an excellent weekend overall. Let me add I have no ties whatsoever to her, but was impressed. She seems to have stepped up her game, whereas a couple others have not. She is stronger, she hits harder. She appears to be a leader on the floor. She stays vocal. Her enthusiasm has a dramatic effect especially with the number of quiet type players on this team. And during the last game, she is one of the players who fueled the rally. She played back row and not only got but controlled several huge digs. She also served really well. She may not have it every game, but I'd bet on her more often than not. The tough decisions need to start factoring in who makes an impact on the floor, not just who is supposed to have the talent.

Not disagreeing with anything here regarding Vondrak and your last statement but someone "good" is likely going to be benched. Bigbee has regressed for whatever reason over the past year so she may be one and Vondrak may be another, especially if CJL goes to a 5-1 with everyone healthy and a tighter rotation. If she does go to a 5-1, my guess is the benched setter will be Horner if Harris isn't moved to a DS instead.
