Misc: Those stupid horns at the world cup

I dont understand what the point of these are except for driving people nuts. I couldnt imagine being one of the players and having to deal with this crap while playing.

I can go either way ... if they can 'reduce' them in the background of TV, great... if not, the game is so much better that i don't pay attention to that sound.

Sounds like they are playing in a giant bee bee hive...

I think they're annoying too, since it sounds like the matches are being played in a beehive.

However, I do think that they represent the culture of the country chosen to host the cup, and that FIFA should have known this going in. To ban the horns now would be indicative of an oversight on FIFA's part. I think they should stay, if for no other reason than it creates an authentic South African soccer experience. Athletes in other sports deal with noise all the time, this is just one other thing soccer players should quit whining about.

They are so obnoxious, I can't keep soccer on in the background while I'm doing something else. I just imagine being at the world cup, and the guy sitting behind you blasting on a horn the entire match.

These instruments have been recorded at levels up to 131 dB A. Put a couple thousand of them together at an event and an exposure duration of 2-3 hours and I would suspect a great deal of permanent hearing loss for the athletes and fans.

For reference, OSHA mandates that anything over 90 dB A for 8 hours and 115 dB A for more than 15 minutes is considered dangerous and could cause permanent hearing loss.
