Thomas or Nader on Brogdon?

As a Virginia fan and knowing the type of player Brogdon is, I would think you'd want to put your bigger physical defender on him the majority of the time.

Thanks for the insight. The only game I watched all the way through was Notre Dame and they really didn't have a good matchup for him, your whole team shot really well too. Bonzie Colson is maybe similar size but they use him sort of as a big like we did Melvin Ejim a few years ago. This is one where I miss Deandre Kane, I think he might have matched up better.

Is Brogdon good at drawing fouls on defenders?

Depends on who's officiating haha, he does attack the basket a good deal especially if the jumper isnt falling which alot of the times leads to him getting it going. Hes a very strong physical guard. As a team we dont get to the line a great deal compared to some other teams in our conference, but he's usually the who gets there the most. I think it all just depends on what the officials are going to do, will they ref the with the soft foul calls that lead to a boring free throw contest (which i cant stand) or are they going to let them play big boy basketball? Hopefully the latter, because this could be the best "game" of the Sweet16 round IMO.

I like Nader on Brogden, but I also don't want him on the bench with two fouls 5 minutes into the game. Nader has the potential to have a big game from the outside against that pack defense.

Possibly but if your Prohm I don't think you can not put Nader on a player just due to foul concerns going into the game. I just hope Abdel can use his fouls on defense and avoid the charging ones he tends to pick up. If he picks up a early foul or two then switch to Matt or Burton but have the refs make the decision for CSP.

I hope UVA gets a lot of fouls called on them with their physical play, and ISU gets none. I think that will be key. Can't have anyone in foul trouble this game.

It's a natural fit for Nader, and given the week of prep, I think he'll do fine.

A bigger question for me is Thomas or Burton when Nader goes out - my guess is Thomas gets the second crack, I don't think I trust Burton in that role

Brogdon isn't a "Hield-type" player where he's looking to score every time he touches the ball. They definitely run their offense through him, but he takes what is there rather than forcing the issue. The key will be to maintain defensive intensity throughout the possession.

You would have the chance to keep Nader in until Brogdon comes out.

I'm guessing they called more fouls on us than the thuggybears when we played them. Although once you escape Big 12 refs, who knows?

Prohm to Nader pre-game: Stick with your man. Think of him as chewing gum. By the end of the game, I want you to know what flavor he is.

Nader to Prohm post-game: It was Dentyne.

From a numbers perspective, ISU is 3rd in the country in fewest free throws shot, and UVa shoots only slightly more. (~50th). ISU and UVa are the 2 bottom teams left in the tourney in FT Rate.

From a UVa perspective, Gill has actually shot 16 more FTs on the season than Brogdon. Brogdon draws just over 4 fouls per 40 minutes played, which would lead ISU but is roughly equivalent in FT rate and fouls drawn to Burton.

Based on the numbers, this should be a clean, low foul, low FT game - but as you said, that is up to the officials.

From what I have seen, the officials have been very good about letting the teams play (but not letting the teams run their mouths).

I like Nader on him. Nader doesn't usually get beat by top players. Its when he's guarding the leftover guy. He needs to stay focused and the team depending on him to shut down an All American should get him focused.

Plus, Thomas hasn't guarded many guys with a post up game, so that could really burn us.

I'm sure they'll both get an opportunity. I could also see Morris denying him the ball for a change of pace.

Is Brogdon good at drawing fouls on defenders?

Brogdon is good at going to the rim and playing through contact, so gets a fail amount of legit fouls and sometimes gets a few calls due to his reputation, but he not especially adept at drawing cheep fouls. He doesn't intentionally jump into defenders all the time like your typical Dukie and doesn't flail as if he has been punched in the face like a Grayson the Tripper Allen type - so he typically doesn't draw a ton of cheap fouls on guys who are playing solid defense.

Gill is somewhat the same way, he plays through a lot of contact but typically doesn't act like he has been fouled, or flail around, so he doesn't get as many calls as some bigs otherwise might. Again, he typically gets plenty of calls because he is a physical post player, but doesn't do a great job necessarily drawing cheaper fouls.

If Nader is going to start out on Brogdon, I hope CSP moves Matt on him after/if Dully gets his first foul before the 10 minute mark.
