Last bowl game we had Germantown Commissary. I thought it was really good. Place is small though.

Commissary for sure. Its worth the drive even if you aren't staying out that way. I think Central's ribs were the best in Memphis (and probably the best I've ever had) but Commissary's sides and atmosphere are equal or better.
Must eats - Central and Gus's Chicken (its a regional chain now but this is the original and some of the best fried chicken I've had).

The Cooper-Young area is a hip, up and coming area with a lot going on. It’s a younger crowd out there. Shopping. Nice restaurants.
Memphis has some fun spots. Also really harrowing to visit the Civil Rights museum. Do it if you have time.
Be careful and use common sense. It’s fun but it’s also the type of town where nice turns to not nice pretty quickly. Stay away from Orange Mound. Don’t leave valuables in your car, even at the hotel. It’s not a hell hole, but stick to the main drag.

Here is a local BBQ place that we visited last time that only had locals at it. The place wasn't much to look at, but the food was fantastic and the experience was authentic to what folks in Memphis have when they go out for BBQ.
We got to meet the owner mom as she walked around. Fantastic lady.

As I recall, the National Civil Rights Museum has its own parking lot.
This looks amazing. Is the disco welcoming to an influx of Iowa Staters who have likely never been to a place like this before?

There are multiple BBQ spots in Central Iowa that are better than Central BBQ in Memphis. We went after visiting the Lorraine Motel (I would recommend that - it's chilling to literally stand where history happened like that) in '17 and while it was good, it wasn't mind blowing or anything.
Of course, I think that Central Iowa has a wildly underrated BBQ scene too.
The group I went with spent most of our time partying on Beale and had an absolute blast. We ordered tons of fried chicken, mac and cheese, and collard greens from Gus's to soak the booze up and I thought that was much more of a treat than Central.

When we were driving from the Airbnb to the stadium, you would pass through a stop light and literally go from palatial quasi-mansions to houses with tarps in place of the roof in hundreds of feet.
I'd never seen as quick of a transition from opulence to squalor.
Brother Junipers is an awesome breakfast spot and a great place to kill a hangover.
If we wear the Jack Trice Throwbacks, the team will also be pantless, according to the entire internet.

I echo others that the Lorraine Motel Civil Rights Museum is a must.
I’m not a “City = bad” type of guy, but Memphis has some of the most unique blends of haves and have nots I have ever seen. The shadow of segregation still lingers heavily over the place.
Some places like Germantown have a sterile, Stepford Wives vibe that’s just… off.
It’s a blue collar town. And they love their Memphis Tigers
