I guess given the two, there is less risk taking a darker view and be pleasantly surprised if things break our way. If I maintained a "good feeling" and the worst happened, well, there'd be no talking me off the ledge of 801 Grand

maybe this has been covered in one of the previous 850 pages, but if one of the big issues with the "power" teams of the big12 is Texas, why would any of them go to PAC12 (or wherever) with them? Why not let them go and build from there? Sorry if this has already been discussed....

The whole we're going to be left out in the cold argument assumes that 4 super conferences form and we are not in any. There are currently 68 teams in BCS conferences. If those four conferences go to 16 that leaves 4 current BCS teams out in the cold plus TCU. That means that 4 current BCS teams plus TCU (joining BCS conference but currently not in) would have to be short changed. With the amount of uncertainty on which of the 5 teams will be left out there are probably about 10-12 teams who are concerned about their future.

In the hypothetical that these teams want to save themselves they could form their own conference with incredibly high exit fees to ensure stability and prevent the 4 super conferences from slowly killing the 5. They would all be motivated to do this because any one of them could be left out in the cold and the shift to 4 16 team conferences won't happen in 1 day. So, if Iowa State, Kansas State, Kansas, Baylor, TCU, Louisville, Rutgers, Cincinnati, South Florida, and Texas Tech. (Just for the sake of argument on the selections of teams left who don't have an already signaled destination conference). That's just BCS teams shut out, then you go add a couple teams like ECU and maybe a BYU or SMU/Houston. Who doesn't matter. It just matters that you have enough clout to prevent the Big 4 conferences from splitting off and claiming a system that can name a true national champ outside of the NCAA.

Any one of those schools is not enough to prevent the super conference from happening. However, all those teams together can not be all shut out. You do that and you have a large enough TV footprint to be a viable conference. You will not be at the level the expanded conferences dollar wise, but you are ensuring a significant enough presence to ensure existence and to warrant a BCS AQ. IF the expanded conferences try to go lock you out of a new playoff system break off from the BCS you have with those 10 teams enough clout politically and from population to either start a major legal headache.

And that is if and only if you believe the media hype that we are headed to the 4 super conferences to set up for a playoff system. There are plenty of ways for ISU and others to have a healthy future IF (and we won't be) we were left without somewhere to land.

Yep. Leaving out teams doesn't make sense in this day and age. Movement isn't to contract. There was talk of the NCAA to going to a 96 team tournament. NFL and MLB don't contract they expand. It would behoove everyone involved (NCAA, Conferences, States, taxpayers) to contract.

Yeah, that's fair, and I have no idea what will happen, but as things fall down around us, it is exciting to see what might happen next.
 
Without being called out in the chicken little thread, I find it a little amusing that we, as ISU fans are thinking that this is going to bounce in our direction. We are Iowa state, a fan base that is perpetually prepared to deal with the worst situation and write it off as just another notch on our belt of "almost situations".

I am not saying anything will happen, just entertained with both sides here.
 
^ haha exactly. ISU fans should always wear a nut cup. This is def the case during the realignment talks.

Question is...who do you build from? If all the big players run off to join the 4 superconferences... who do you have left? Assuming the 4 conferences let the 5th play for the NCG, how does a small group of schools stay relevant and viable?

Every time there was a kick to the stones we still endured. Cyclone fans went on, Iowa state went on. No matter what happens there still will be Iowa State. Sometimes change is good.

I feel like this has to be up there with ultimate kick in the pants scenario for ISU.
Look on the bright side though, weeding out more half fans that can't hack being a clone:twitcy::twitcy::twitcy::twitcy:

I'm seeing positives regardless of how this all shakes out. If we end up in a power conference, we'll be happy as heck and have money flowing out our tails. If we end up left out and in the top next tier conference, we'll have a little less money to work with, but we'll have more athletic success. Either way we win.

Because in a PAC scenario, Texas would be forced into the more equal rules of the PAC. They'd be one of 16 votes, instead of one of 2 votes that really matter in the big 12.

Dont understand why OU would want that though. Sure, theyre equal to UT now, but theyre also now equal to Washington State. If the last month shouldve shown OU anything its that they still have quite a lot of power in the current big 12 arrangement.

Weeding out fair weather/bandwagon fans = destroying your athletic budget.
