The Shrine is Gone

It's pretty amazing what some individuals can accomplish when they stay focused on something. My wife and I went to Bishops Castel in CO last summer which a guy has been building for the past 40 + years. It's pretty cool but a bit sketchier than it looks in the pictures.

FYI- if you go there download a map ahed of time on your phone because there is not cell service there.

A shrine to what?

His daughter or daughters? I believe the story was they were killed by a drunk driver and he would wait in his front yard for that car to drive by again one day. Not sure if this is true, just the story I was always told.

He was always in the front yard across the street every time we drove by. Creep AF.

This was the story I was told, and have repeated many times.

He absolutely used to wait in the van at night. I personally encountered it.

Too bad it's gone, although from the sounds of it he probably wouldn't care.

That’s really too bad. It was an amazing piece of “outsider” art. Could have easily been preserved and made into a destination. County has no imagination when it comes to preserving culture and landmarks.
I moved away from Boone back in 2000. Like so many small towns/rural counties there is a severe lack of innovation. They want to stay the same. ****, the population of Boone is the exact same as it was when I was born 40+ years ago, even with the growth of Ames and ISU. It's pretty remarkable actually.

What shrine? I grew up in Ogden and put on a million miles it seems like going back and forth to Boone but don’t recall any shrine. Granted I moved out in like 2000.
I moved away from Boone in 2000, so I'm assuming this probably went up after that. Especially since my group of friends and I liked exploring weird places like the ghost horse near the Des Moines river and the abandoned building just north of Boone

Like the Grotto in West Bend

Damn. I'd never heard of this. Would have loved to have somehow met this eccentric man and seen his art.
