I get sick and tired of hearing people that dont understand how a paper works ***** and moan about newspapers. So ive chosen to answer a few questions. Clones85, I suggest you go to the register and request a tour of both the paper and the production (state of the art) facility. You obviously havent a clue.
Last I knew they didnt have people working in that dept on sundays so I doubt you did. He wrote about Nebraska because their are fans of Nebraska in the state. The paper doesnt just care about what you care about.
Well, if you wanted to sell a lot of papers, would you put one subject on the front or multiple. They managed to get the isu fan interested w/ the pic and then have other stories on the front to go along with it to capture more readers. derrrrr
Exactly, to increase readership, good work.
Well as we all know the Ceader Rapids Gazette has over 500,000 copies delivered on Sunday like the DMR. Wait no they dont. They have prob around 25,000 copies if that. Now I realize you come from a journalism background so I dont need to go into detail on how a newspaper, especially one as large as the sunday paper is laid out because im sure you understand that this is done on around Monday or Tuesday of the week. Its called pagenation (but you already knew that). Its a giant puzzle that takes dozens of people to put together. Sooooo... Now that the paper is laid out they dont know the outcome of the game so they reserve space for say a picture for example win/lose. W/ the story to come in later pages. I dont know how they did things back in high school when you delivered papers, but thats how it works now. Lots of times they will print the entire paper and then add in special pages w/ sports or something towards the back as the news comes in and they stick them in after the majority of the paper is printed however i dont know if this is how the dmr does it.
I have never heard anyone say anything good about a newspaper and ive been involved w/ around 154 of them. Everyone thinks their local paper sucks.
Thats like saying car dealerships are going out of business. Some are, small cities w/ 2 papers or weak papers. The DMR is one of the strongest papers in the country and to quote the New York Times "The Des Moines Register is the Gold Standard" ect.
See above, more stories on the front get more readers, think logically about something and usually you can find the answer as to why things are the way they are
Exactly and most newspapers would like you to do more of that. Why (you didnt ask) you ask? Because papers dont make money via subscriptions sold or by people buying the paper at a gas station, they make it from advertising. Not only does it cost money to print a paper, it is hard to prove to a potential advertiser how many and who is reading the paper. However, it is verrry easy to target different age groups or demographics online and prove exactly how many looked at their ad, clicked on their ad ect.
