The Rag is at it again....

That had to do with the time of the game and when the Sunday Paper that you get went to press.

IMO, there was no conspiracy.

And it appears that Andrew Logue who covers Cyclone Sports for the Rag was at Lubbock.

That's pure ********. It was a 6pm kick, the game was over by what 9-9:30 the article was written and done by 10:30-11. When I delivered for the CR gazette in high school they didn't even start until 11:30 or so and sometimes would hold for later if there was a late hawk game or something like that. Final edit isn't usually until just before that.

Point being they knowingly, intentional or not to blow off the ISU game.

I will get it over with and queue the "Rag sucks, why do people read it" post.

Should we worry about newspapers? Does anyone read them who isn't over 45? They are going out of business for a reason.

The only time I ever read the rag is when I get a free one with my fillup at Kum and Go.

And then I only read the comics and the sports page (if there is something about ISU).

Probably for the same reason that the Omaha World Herald writes about Iowa State.

Writing about Nebraska is fine.

Writing about Nebraska on the FRONT PAGE of a Sunday paper after Iowa has one of the worst losses in history and ISU has one of their best wins in history? Pathetic. No ISU article on front page. And who wrote the article? DSM Registers top sports guy Marc Hansen.

Never understood about paying for something I could read online free.

Yeah it is dumb. It's like me buying a real XMas tree every year. I'm spending more money than if I just bought a fake one and only had to pay for it once. But I grew up with the real tree every year and love the smell. Same thing with a newspaper. Something about getting it in the morning and reading it while drinking coffee. Minus the coffee, it reminds me of childhood

The time of the game in Texas was the reason for the lack of ISU article on the front page. Come State Basketball Tournament time next March take note of how their is NO front page article of who wins the late Saturday night championship game in the Sunday Sports Section.

Probable reason for a Nebraska article instead of an Iowa one by Marc Hansen is that the Hawkeyes totally sucked. And Hansen probably had his article submitted by 6 pm. Saturday to meet the press deadline. But feel free to rant.

6 pm deadline? Really? Have you ever heard of a 6pm deadline?

We were a front page article against Baylor. Know what time that game started? Where it was played at?

I'll say it again. Nebraska, barring byes by Iowa and Iowa State, should never be on the front page...... of the Sunday paper....... following gameday....... in the DES MOINES Register (key words being Des Moines)

I get sick and tired of hearing people that dont understand how a paper works ***** and moan about newspapers. So ive chosen to answer a few questions. Clones85, I suggest you go to the register and request a tour of both the paper and the production (state of the art) facility. You obviously havent a clue.

I called on Sunday and cancelled the DSM register

We beat a top 20 team on the road by 34 points
Iowa loses to one of the worst teams in history

Marc Hansen writes about Nebraska?! It's the DES MOINES REGISTER!! Why the hell is he writing about Nebraska?

Last I knew they didnt have people working in that dept on sundays so I doubt you did. He wrote about Nebraska because their are fans of Nebraska in the state. The paper doesnt just care about what you care about.

My DSM register had an ISU picture on the front but no article of ISU's big win until the 6th or 7th page. Instead? Nebraska

Well, if you wanted to sell a lot of papers, would you put one subject on the front or multiple. They managed to get the isu fan interested w/ the pic and then have other stories on the front to go along with it to capture more readers. derrrrr

Probably for the same reason that the Omaha World Herald writes about Iowa State.

Exactly, to increase readership, good work.

Well as we all know the Ceader Rapids Gazette has over 500,000 copies delivered on Sunday like the DMR. Wait no they dont. They have prob around 25,000 copies if that. Now I realize you come from a journalism background so I dont need to go into detail on how a newspaper, especially one as large as the sunday paper is laid out because im sure you understand that this is done on around Monday or Tuesday of the week. Its called pagenation (but you already knew that). Its a giant puzzle that takes dozens of people to put together. Sooooo... Now that the paper is laid out they dont know the outcome of the game so they reserve space for say a picture for example win/lose. W/ the story to come in later pages. I dont know how they did things back in high school when you delivered papers, but thats how it works now. Lots of times they will print the entire paper and then add in special pages w/ sports or something towards the back as the news comes in and they stick them in after the majority of the paper is printed however i dont know if this is how the dmr does it.
I will get it over with and queue the "Rag sucks, why do people read it" post.

I have never heard anyone say anything good about a newspaper and ive been involved w/ around 154 of them. Everyone thinks their local paper sucks.

Should we worry about newspapers? Does anyone read them who isn't over 45? They are going out of business for a reason.

Thats like saying car dealerships are going out of business. Some are, small cities w/ 2 papers or weak papers. The DMR is one of the strongest papers in the country and to quote the New York Times "The Des Moines Register is the Gold Standard" ect.

See above, more stories on the front get more readers, think logically about something and usually you can find the answer as to why things are the way they are

Exactly and most newspapers would like you to do more of that. Why (you didnt ask) you ask? Because papers dont make money via subscriptions sold or by people buying the paper at a gas station, they make it from advertising. Not only does it cost money to print a paper, it is hard to prove to a potential advertiser how many and who is reading the paper. However, it is verrry easy to target different age groups or demographics online and prove exactly how many looked at their ad, clicked on their ad ect.

The deadline for the first (state) edition is before 8:00 p.m.

Only the metro/Golden Circle would have gotten any game coverage, since that area has the latest deadline.

Ah cute. Sorry to say a bad word about you Marc.

You are correct, I didn't call in on Sunday. I called in on Monday morning. My apologies.

Question, do you think the Omaha newspapers or Lincoln newspapers had a story of Iowa State on the front page? They didn't? That's odd.

Another question. How many Nebraska fans do you think there are in Central Iowa? And how many Iowa State fans? Good job out of the DSM register on that one. I'm sure their sales greatly increased by adding Nebraska on there.

Why does the DSM Register call so many people around Des Moines trying to sell them the paper if they would rather them go on their website?

uhhh ohhhh somebody knows something about how a newspaper works!!!!!!! You keep your facts and logic out of this!!!!!

If you don't want to hear people ripping on the company you work for than you should probably stay out of these threads. It's not the 1st time the Register has been ripped and it definitely won't be the last

And I will ask one more time. What time did we kick off against Baylor? What time did we kick off against Tech? Where were both games played? And was the Baylor game not on the front page? So what was the difference? You say it's b/c of the 8 PM time, but that doesn't add up then

Deadlines Shmeadlines. The Rag has been delayed MANY times over the years to give them time to get stories done when their beloved team played late games. For some strange coincidence, their deadlines are much more rigid on weekends involving Iowa State games.

Answers inside your quote. For further info, consult a book my niece has entitled "How Newspapers Work. for kids" And the "for kids" part is written in crayon, its on amazon.

My names not Marc its Mark, get it right.

See, there is no reason to lie, youre among friends who wish to help.

Question, do you think the Omaha newspapers or Lincoln newspapers had a story of Iowa State on the front page? They didn't? That's odd.

Im not familiar w/ Lincolns paper, however I am sure that the OWH did have ISU on their paper as I subscribe to it.

Another question. How many Nebraska fans do you think there are in Central Iowa? And how many Iowa State fans? Good job out of the DSM register on that one. I'm sure their sales greatly increased by adding Nebraska on there.

First, and I should have covered this in my first post, the DMR is not just a central Iowa paper, it covers the whole state as well as Omaha/Council Bluffs. Not sure how many exactly however there was a study a few (like 5 or so) years ago that had the stats of this. Iowa was of course #1 followed by ISU w/ Nebraska 3rd edging out UNI. Does that mean they shouldnt cover UNI? Im cornnnn fused.

Why does the DSM Register call so many people around Des Moines trying to sell them the paper if they would rather them go on their website?

Well, again, the goal of the newspapers is to sell advertising to businesses(businesses are those things that try to sell you goods). Businesses wont buy advertising in something that nobody sees. Thats why they dont advertise on your bathroom wall, not to many would see it. So they try to sell subscriptions so they can say x many of people read the paper and saw your ad. The internets and websites are just a different medium to get you to see their ads.

I dont understand what the problem is, there was an Iowa state pic on the front page? the story was deeper inside. Again they put as much as possible on the front page to get peoples attention, there was no reason to put the entire story on the front

Probably for the same reason that the Omaha World Herald writes about Iowa State.

Flawed logic.

The OWH is in a state border location. Like the QC Times. The Times covers UofIL sports because their readership straddles the two states. The OWH covers Nebby, UofI and ISU because their readership straddles both states.

The Rag is in central IA. They don't need to cover collegiate sports in Nebraska anymore than they do with their "extensive" cover of the U of IL sports.
