Texas Tech Defense

I've never really thought about this in previous years, or even this year until their recent losses, but I think this is a big issue.

Honestly, in a foot race from one end of the court to the other, I think guys like Babb, Halliburton, THT, Shayok, and Jacobsen would get SMOKED by most of their contemporaries in this conference.

Yeah it's not like when ISU actually gets out and runs that they're winning the race to the rim.

Is there anyone that's strong with a backdoor cut?

Their best asset is when they move the ball and it's weird that it's the answer one game only to decide to drive into traffic the next game.

I can't remember who it was, but I remember last year, or year before, Prohm was recruiting a kid, and one of the scouts comments about him was that he was maybe the fastest player in the class. I thought then that would be a really neat piece defensively, and in transition.

And to project this issue into the future, I do think it can improve next season, especially if Wigginton were to return. Nixon should be an improvement, especially on defense. Leech, if healthy, definitely increases athleticism. I'm not certain about Jackson or Andersen.

I believe Tech also has a top 10 draft pick on their team (someone correct me if wrong)
That would be Jarrett Culver, a Lubbock product. Tubby refused to recruit him despite local coaches and most of his assistants strongly suggesting Tubby should look into him. After Tubby left for Memphis, who was the first prospect that Beard recruited after accepting the job? Jarrett Culver. Beard can spot talent.

I wouldn't consider ISU a young team- almost 49% our our minutes in Big 12 play are from guys with 4 or 5 years of college experience. Nick (36mpg) - 5 years, Marial (34.2ppg) - 5 years, Michael (23.4ppg) - 4 years and Zoran (4.2ppg) - 5 years
ISU frosh account for the 2nd highest usage rate, Kansas is #1.

IOWA STATE
35.4% - SR
13.0% - JR
15.8% - SO
35.8% - FR

ISU defense is better than previous years, but issues it can improve on are:

1) providing more resistance from on dribble penetration
2) reduce "over" helping on man rotations
3) better gap integrity when collapsing to create the "packline"

All of the above would tremendously decrease the frequency of ISU defenders having to "help the helper". Like any team, when you are scrambling that much you are going to get burned on open shots and defensive rebounds.

p.s. Positive, ISU PNR defense has improved over the past 10 games except for the occasional miscommunication/confusion

Sounds like everybody can, except Tubby. Which, we kinda already knew.

Just to be clear,I did not mention coaching anywhere in my post. Not the answer I was looking for. I'm guessing that they are being taught similar things but not executing. As for talent, I don't know. Multiple posters on this board claim we have the best in the conference which I've argued with. Obviously we have a couple freshmen out there too. Maybe they just haven't 'bought in' to defense after all.

Where were you when we were winning?

Culver might go #2 after Zion Williamson.

"Top 10" for him is a rather conservative assessment.

I've just been really focusing on watching Tech's defense tonight. First of all, I am no guru on defense or basketball in general. I just like to learn from those in the know. Tech just doubled Osetkowski also, and by the time he pivoted to pass it out to the guard, the Tech player had already rotated over to make that pass defended. On Saturday, he was able to pass it right out and the open guard nailed the three or had plenty of time to pass it to a wide open guy as another defender was flying at him. So.... what is the main issue? As a collective group, does our team not execute? Not understand? Is our double-team not quick enough or from the wrong player? Two guys do their job, three don't? Our personnel isn't equipped to play 'D' like that? Maybe Tech's double team is tougher to pass out of , includes more height than what we're able to provide? Just would like to understand.
Look, I realize there is more to defense than this one particular scenario, like stopping the dribble penetration etc., but Texas has beaten their man off the dribble different times, too, and Tech is there to either block or cause havoc with the dish. Call me envious (or jealous) of their defense.
There was one play where Shayok went down to double Osetkowski, who promptly passed it out to Shayok’s man on the close wing for a wide open 3 pointer. Shayok’s frustrated reaction to me looked like he thought Halliburton was supposed to rotate over and cover his man and didn’t, instead remaining on the far side.

Whats the back story on that?

I think it was Darius McNeil, wasn’t it?

Texas Tech lost 6 of their top 8 scorers from last season. They did pick up 2 Senior grad transfers...Owens from St John's & Mooney from South Dakota. Obviously they gel very quickly. And while I agree we are slow in our rotations, I don't think Mooney, Moretti, & Odiase are quicker or faster then any of our guys.

I think a big part of ISU's defensive issues comes from chemistry - not personal chemistry, but just playing together a lot chemistry.

Lots of freshman minutes, Lard and Wigg coming back late, Solo out-in-out. They just have not been together a lot as the same nucleus, and this affects defense just as much as offense.

No, wasn't him. I looked up past offers. Pretty sure it was either Courtney Ramey at Texas, or Kira Lewis at Bama.
I think it was Lewis.
Which looking at it now, they were both top 45 guys, so obviously they would be an improvement in speed and athleticism.

They’ve started the same five for 28 out of 29 games, the top-7 has been static since December, and they were better defensively in the first half of the conference season. If it’s chemistry related, it’s more symptomatic of emerging personal issues than lack of playing together.

Isn't it annoying as heck to knowTech earlier and now KState tonight pummel TCU? A TCU team that kicked our butt twice. Yet we beat both Tech and KState.. on the road no less. SOMEONE EXPLAIN how this goofy game of basketball works!!??! Lol
ISU shot 58% from three at Manhattan. They would have beat the Celtics that Saturday. Incredible offensive outburst.
