Ah, the Fiesta Bowl Block Party 1997. The first and only time I saw a giant tortilla chip lowered into a giant bowl of salsa at midnight. There are quite a few people there, usually lots of bands.

Do you suppose their unwillingness to move the game away from the block party event has anything to do with it being on NFL network??? Just makes sense if the bowl committee dictates the time of the game and ESPN says no then they have to look for someone else to televise it.

I didn't watch the video, so I don't know if there's something in there that would give you this idea, but what gives you this idea? As far as I'm aware, NFL Network just outbid ESPN for the rights to air the game.

1997 Fiesta Bowl (actually it was for the '96 season) Texas vs Penn State

Saw the Monkees at the big block party - great gathering.

I've been looking for info for this online and it looks like it's a $20 admission. It certainly appears to be the spot to celebrate a Cyclone victory, but can anyone provide any info on what the $20 gets you? Is it just admission to cover the cost of the event or is there something more to it? Also, is it worth the extra $80/person to go with the VIP ticket???

Thanks!

I believe you're game ticket gets you a discounted entry fee. I thought I read somewhere that The Doobie Brothers were headlining this year.

Used to live in Mesa and Chandler. This block party is great. Many bands usually play. A few big time bands plus a few locals. Great time.

Anyone know if people who aren't 21 can get into this. Have some family that will be with that are in college but not 21 yet

The VIP option is what we are considering as well, free food and drinks and not having to worry about having a good view of the bands. I just called and they do have them available still, only doing 300 total. My only concern is that it goes from 5 till 1230am, but I imagine that with the game we won't be there until 7 or so, trying to justify if I would spend $40 an hour for the two of us if we went another route.

I went when I was 17, but that was back in 1997. I'm pretty sure they just give armbands if you're of age.

At the time, there were a ton of bands - Gin Blossoms were popular at the time, and they headlined. I also saw The Monkees, which was interesting. Some great local blues and rock bands.

I thought the video show a few kiddie type carnival rides so I don't think there should be any concern about minimum age. (at least earlier in the evening.)

I was at this STYX concert last year, and the mayor of Tempe was standing there with the band mgrs., so myself and actually several other people standing near-by got backstage passes. Got to meet the entire band, my brother got his guitar signed, and the concert was just amazing! (However it should be illegal for them to perform this song without Dennis DeYoung).

I ended up pulling the trigger on the VIP passes, figured it would be pretty easy to spend the $80 a person in five hours if drinks are going to run between the typical $6-8 and food on top, plus not having to mess with much of the crowd to see the headliner will be a plus. They did say that there were plenty more of the VIP passes left but there is a $12 service fee on top of the order but once it is paid any other items bought from the ticket office is without the fee. Not sure what else I would buy from that ticket office but I digress...looking forward to the trip.

One last piece of info I learned is that beer sales in the game shut off at the start of the third quarter.
