Tech

I'm happy for Tech. There fans aren't nearly as bad as most Big 12 teams, and I really like Beard as a head coach.

I just wonder how he gets guys to go play there? Yesterday at the halftime break he said they were playing way too fast and needed to slow it way down and play Tech basketball. How do you get kids to want to come play that style? And especially in the middle of nowhere in Lubbock?

Fact is though, you have to play defense to have success, and so if you want to get to the Final Four, you might have to play this style of ball?

There's a saying in HR/business circles about employee turnover that goes "People don't leave companies/jobs, they leave managers"

Guessing most of these guys want to play for Beard first.

I like the fact that we got a W vs. a Final 4 team.

Mooney has really impressed me in the tournament. He went to USD??

Beard can coach like no one's bidness.

Tech FB hasn't been anything special the past few years. Heck, Rhoads even played Tuberville's teams pretty well.

You can get players to Lubbock just by virtue of being in Texas, but Tech is another place where they need a special coach (Leach, Beard), to have significant success.

so has Tech exceeded us in landing *special coaches* ? Could any of our coaches had the sames success at Tech?

Defensive teams advance well into the NCAA tournament because, by and large, that is how the game is officiated. Tournament games this year have been incredibly physical. Not really my style of hoops, but I suppose it works.

Also, a poor shooting night won't necessarily beat you if you can also prevent the other team from scoring.

Of course.

Knight (even in his last years), Beard, and Leech are all great coaches that make guys like Morgan, McDermott, and Rhoads look very mediocre, like the many other coaches TT has gone through.

Here's the deal: How can a place like Lubbock attract good talent in FB & BB and be successful? More important, it they can do it, we can do - but why haven't we?

As for football, Iowa State is now in a better place than Tech as a program. A lot of that has to do with Matt Campbell.

For basketball, Tech has one of the best coaches in CBB. This isn't commentary about Prohm as much as it is that Chris Beard has proven he belongs in that Top 5 Coaches conversation - not for career accomplishments (it's too early for that) but for potential for the future.

So in both cases it's all about who you hand the keys to your program to.

I think Campbell could. His story at ISU isn't finished though. Though I think we can agree that Leach is one of a kind :)

Basketball, outside of McD we've hired solid coaches, but Beard is looking like the type of coach that will be targeted by the blue bloods and schools with deep pockets. I think our current and past coaches could be successful in Lubbock, but not sure they'd take them to the FF

TT is doing the Big 12 a huge solid with this run. Can't think of any good reason to disparage.

Because most journalists can’t do math we really need a few breakout success stories.

What the B12 did last year is equivalent to if the ACC had 5 Elite 8 teams in one year. Nobody noticed, can’t do the math. In short our 10 teams have to achieve at least as much as the other leagues 14 and 15 teams achieve.

No doubt, C Beard is incredible - to take a team to the Final 4 in the second year!!
I travel to Lubbock once a month on business and ask what's this place got that we don't have?
PS: Tech started Beard out at a higher salary that Prohm is getting now. I believe Beard today is about $500K - $1MM higher vs Prohm. Tech apparently does have money.

Most guys that care about winning and getting better don't care about the location, just the coach. East Lansing, MI and Syracuse, NY aren't exactly scenic places either.

Agree, I attended our game with them in January and I was jealous how loud and enthusiastic they were - not to mention the place was sold out.

Well they are located in Texas. Even if it’s the bad part of Texas. Some Recruits like playing in their home state.

Grats to TT, they with out a doubt deserve it.

It does make me think that ISU was just a few chemistry issues within the team away from achieving more success.

Maybe we'll get there one day, but we aren't going to do it with errant passes and step-back threes. Time to work on the defensive side of the ball, something I'm not too optimistic about if Wiggs and THT stay. We'll see.

Obviously Beard is a great coach, but it certainly helps to have a top 5 NBA pick, All American and centerpiece of your team grow up in Lubbock. Did a great job getting the transfers as well. Also helps that they have four fifth year grown ass men in Francis, Mooney, Owens and Odiase.
