Teams You'd Prefer to Avoid/Play in March

Kentucky, Samford, Indiana State, and Alabama all take a high volume of 3s (over 600-700 attempted so far on the year) and shoot 38% from 3 or better. These teams would be our kryptonite.

Kentucky averages almost 10 turnovers per game, so we may be able to neutralize them that way. The other 3 I want no part of.

Any team that plays like BYU or Baylor scares me..

We are not built to play against an elite 3 point shooting team

It's not about how we are built, it's about how we choose to defend teams that have shooters. We don't adjust. We still hedge really hard and run double teams which leads to wide open looks. BYU absolutely torched us with ball movement. That's my only knock on TJ's defensive scheme. There comes a time when you need to adapt to your opponent but we don't really do that.

I agree about his lack of adjustments, but I think he's changed since that game. I look at that match-up as more of an outlier since they are the only team that's beaten us by double digits. I think BYU would have beaten a lot of teams the way they played us that night.

1) they outrebounded us
2) they shot the 3 well
3) they beat us in the turnover margin
4) they had a big that could hit the 3 and pass out of double teams (and could facilitate at the top of the key)
5) they had 21 fast break points (we have only given up double digit fast break point in one other conference game - TCU in Ft Worth when they made their comeback)

It was the one game where it just felt like we couldn't get a stop because they were so dialed in.

There is no doubt that there are other teams out there that ISU does not match up well with and would likely beat ISU.... The question is: Can ISU avoid playing them in the brackets? There is definite luck involved.

Here's the thing....IMO there just isn't a super dominant team this season that is unbeatable. I feel like you could tell me Baylor, or BYU makes the Final Four and I would not be shocked. Even Illinois has a decent team and if things 'click' could make elite 8 run or something.

As others have said, matchups are a big piece but there just isn't a team that truly scares me this season. Now, I think Houston is really good for sure, maybe the best, but ISU beat them at home.

This NCAA tourney is going to be real fun.

Houston and Iowa State are obvious ones given their defenses. But Houston is likely to be a #1 seed and Iowa State is in the #2/#3 range right now, so they're obvious big baddies in the bracket.

UCF is going to be dangerous if they make it in with their defense, though...

Shades of the Brockington team -- can't score but you aren't scoring on them. In a game like that with a team that isn't used to the Big 12 pressure style, they might be able to slay some dragons.

They've got a lot of work to do to make the tournament, though.
UCF looks like us last year based on their rankings. little better on O. Dangerous for sure.

So much is based on how games are called though.

The BYU-KSU game on Saturday was playing out essentially the same way as our game at BYU did. However, against KSU, BYU started missing those open 3 point looks and that game suddenly got close. Granted, we turned the ball over quite a bit at BYU, but our game could have looked completely different if BYU started missing a couple 3's in row.

Anyone who has a three point sharpshooter that is under 30% in 3point percentage since the first of the year.:)

Texas Tech was 8 of 11 from 3 tonight just 15 minutes in. Any team that can shoot like that can beat about anyone one time.
