TCU fan attendance

I don't think our fans realize how good they have it. The growth of our program outpaced the growth of quality in our fans.

You people are still failing to understand that it was fall break. We also lost our QB a few days earlier and our top 2 RBs are also not playing. Countless other starters gone before the season started. Some people are just giving up. That would happen at any program.

It wasn't the student side that had the poor attendance. Your east side looked full from my vantage point in the upper deck NE corner. It was the west side that was like half empty.

Being in a big city actually causes a decline in attendance. There are too many other things people can be doing. Not to mention the majority of people in Fort Worth are Horns, Sooners and Sand Aggies.

That being said, the weather I can somewhat excuse from the more casual fan. That was not nice weather as far as Texas is concerned. 50 degrees with a north wind. I much prefer it to that 100 degree heat, but I am probably in the minority Figures we happen to play ISU who found the weather to be perfect.

No one is hating on TCU, gets thicker skin. We are trying to wrap our brains around a home conference opener of a top 15 team in their first home game in BCS bigtime college football and having an empty stadium. Trust me, we know empty stadiums, but we haven't had the success the Christians have had either or the urban population.

I agree, with what you're saying. I don't wonder if the amount of other big time schools in Texas has something to do with it. TCU's success has been fairly recent and I'd wouldn't be surprised if the casual football fan in their region gravitated to schools like Texas and A&M.

Tune in on the day after Thanksgiving to see what a student section should look like. It will be pretty much like any other game for us. The students will show up.

You are comparing yourself to West Virginia? If the game was against anyone besides ISU or Kansas there would have been a lot more people there. That's just how it works.

Only making the point that our students show up during breaks. They won't be there for West Virginia, they will be there for Iowa State.

So... fall break + players out = giving up? Your team was still undefeated, ranked #15 in the country, playing your home opener in a new big-league conference, and your fans are giving up already? Inexcusable. Even the weather is a better excuse than that.

I appreciate your input in this forum, HornyFrog, and I mean no disrespect. I've considered this and your other comments on the board - including the one about because ISU is perceived a lesser program, that also contributed to the lower attendance. But if this is seriously the thought process you and your fans go through, you obviously have a long road ahead of you. Prior to the season, a lot of people doubted your ability to make it through a season with a tough "grind" schedule week in and week out, and if you're falling the week after Kansas to a "perceived" bottom feeder, that doesn't make your team much. C'mon. You guys are better than that, you were in NC talks not long ago... You gotta realize you're in a new league with new challenges, understand that nobody is going to hand you anything, and also understand ISU today is not what it was the last time we played.

Your players looked good on the field, and I had a great time. I just hope that your fans can get themselves together, or you coming to this conference will have certainly been a bad idea for you.

Hey, we've been there. Our fans used to only show up for Iowa and Nebraska. But, we have figured a lot of things out since then and you will too. I bet we get a little more of your team and fans' respect next time we come though. And yes, you aren't texas or ou, but we'll still put 54,000+ butts in seats when your team shows up in Ames next year. Maybe it will even warm up to the low 50's.

And the other people there will probably mostly be from the opposing school, not necessarily TCU.

I think there are a number of things accounting for TCU's attendance. Fall Break is a major one and so is the size of the school. Around 9000 undergraduates isn't that many at all, especially when you consider that TCU draws a ton of out of state students, I beleive I heard 1800 of this year's freshman class was out of state. Students who come from out of state also tend to leave the state when they are done. Then, the biggest factor, 63% of TCU alums are female. Not saying they don't like football, but with those numbers I am guessing most belong to a split-fandom household now...

That is an insanely favorable ratio. 63-37.

At ISU it is 43-57 female-to-male.

It's down a bit now for the current student body (59-41) but thats still pretty damn good. I know I really enjoyed my 30 minute run through campus there when we played them years ago...

Good point. It's tough to find alternative ways to sell tickets for conference games when students are on break. The case in point would be our full student section for the Oklahoma State game even thought the students were on break.

That is the point I'm making. Our fans (not all) look at it the opposite way. Again, probably a symptom of spending years in WAC, CUSA and MWC. They are programmed to show up for certain games (BYU, Utah, or Baylor).

It has nothing to do with quality of the program - just the perceived relevance based on name recognition.

For those with the attendance superiority complex, you might want to take a look at ISU attendance from as recent as two years ago (CPR's second year). Particularly the last game where ISU was fighting #15 MU for bowl eligibility. The announced attendance was about 42,000, and by the looks on TV, There were probably about 35,000 actually in attendance. Was it cold? Certainly, but according to this thread, cold shouldn't matter.

And then the year before that, again with ISU fighting to get bowl-eligible, #18 OSU played in Ames to an announced crowd of about 40,000 (ESPN in town, nice fall day), and by the looks on TV, there were maybe 35,000 there (probably closer to 30,000). I believe the predominant excuse given on that occasion was that is was nice day so kids had to go home to combine corn (check the archive). To CF's credit, that excuse was called called into question.

We've had good home attendance for...well...1.5 years in a row now. If within the last five years, your school (of nearly 30,000 enrollment) has had to give "combining corn" as an excuse for a sparse crowd during a game when 1) the team is fighting for bowl eligibility, 2) a rated team is in town, 3) beautiful sunny, fall day, 4) ESPN is televising the game, you really have no business trashing other schools for bad attendance. It really makes you look silly...

So what you are saying is, even when our attendance was "bad" in recent history, we still brought more fans than TCU did on Saturday. Got it.
