Targeting

I agree with Jack Whitver when he said, "This game was decided 33 seconds into the game when Isheen Young was called for Targeting".....

And thats not my only gripe...When the Okies were tearing helmets off of our players endangering their necks....see broken necks in this regard...No one got ejected for that...where in the HELL is the justice in that?

I think its time for a little common sense when it comes to flagrant fouls that endanger players.....

The bluebloods do get leeway unfortunately.

15 yard for targeting, sure. DQ? No way.

Compare that to a typical 15 yard face mask call against OU later in the game where the player damnn near ripped Purdy’s head off. Which play was more dangerous?
If they keep the rule as it currently is then they need to review facemask penalties and start ejecting facemask where they hang on because that is definitely intentional.

True. Plus the potential injury factor from it, too.

There needs to be targeting 1 and targeting 2 level penalties. Incidental contact targeting 1, 15 yards. Headhunting targeting 2, ejection.

Or a one game suspension is handed out by the NCAA the following Monday, not referees in the moment.

If I was Young I’d have found that ref on the field after the loss. Payback time. It’s time to revolt on these bias calls favoring the elites. Refs beware the time has come for a reckoning. You SCUM

You mean, like, attack the ref and get arrested?

If you are serious, you’re an idiot. If you are joking, you should keep your day job. This is an idiotic statement either way.

To those who say it was a bad or dumb play by Young or say he should've pulled up...that's BS.

He did exactly what he was supposed to do. Stoops was moving backwards trying to get extra yards. Young lowered his shoulder to make the tackle and it's just unfortunate that Stoops fell when he did and his head was at Young's shoulder level.

He was to the point of no return and he was going to make contact no matter what. If you've played football you should know you let up in that situation and you're liable to get hurt.

I don't blame Young one bit.

I agree it was the right call and I hope this is a big learning moment for Young. He reminds me of a young Jaquan Bailey. He let's his energy get in the way of playing smart. That play reminded me sooo much of the Texas game when Bailey did a somersault that killed momentum. Huge teaching moment.

Totally disagree with the not playing smart comment regarding Young. He was making a good football play trying to keep Stoops from gaining more yards. He was playing smart. It was just bad luck that Stoops' head was where it was when the tackle was made.

I love that we have a special penalty for targeting to keep players safe.
But I Hate the way the rule is written and enforced. We have very clearly seen just in ISU games alone how stupid and messed up it is, when players had no intention of targeting but that is what happens / gets called and they get ejected.

And I disagree with what happened today, he was in good position to make a good football play with his shoulder !, then receiver drops low and that results in the head blow. How the f*** is that the defenders fault.
It is insane.

Yes exactly. Glad we are on same page. It’ll send a message to ref’s to stop taking payments to make biased calls. It’s the only way at this point. I’m talking black eyes here, not broken arms hehe. But only attack after the game to avoid the 15 yard penalty.

So here is what needs to be done. As soon as a player with the ball appears to be off balance, everyone needs to pull up, the whistle needs to blow and forward progress is given per the opinion of the officials.

That way defenders will not have to tackle a player to stop forward progress and subject themselves to a potential targeting because a player falls awkwardly or puts their own head down into the defender.

With that said, it also seems to me that targeting should be both open to d and o. Offensive players duck their heads way too often when making contact with the defender. If the helmet or shoulder is a weapon, noone should get to use them.

Someday we'll have AI that will be able to show what movement by which player actually caused the inappropriate contact. For now we just have to accept that it is always the fault of whomever has isu on their jersey.
