Targeting

If targeting is called it’s an automatic ejection with the rule right now. It should just be like any other personal foul. 2 of any PF and you’re gone. You can’t tell me it’s safer for someone to grab and yank on a face mask than it is for targeting. It should be the same penalty application.

It’s stupid because the data doesn’t even support it. The long term brain damage isn’t caused by big hits, it’s caused by the small every-down hits. The whole “targeting” penalty is just a band aid to make it appear like action was being taken, but doesn’t actually help the problem.

As many have already said. The rule is fine for the most part but the ejection thing has to go. I am sorry but that part is ruining the game. It should be treated like the basketball flagrant 1 and flagrant 2 situation OR the first one is a warning and the second is an ejection. Idk, but this ejection crap for guys trying to make football plays and not intentionally head hunting (and you can tell the difference) has got to go.

I agree that by definition, Young committed a targeting penalty. (An aside, but so did Hathcock on his tackle, and an OU player near the end of the game, neither of which were called). The spirit of the penalty is to eliminate headhunters and cheap shots. Im fine with a 15 yd penalty bc it happened, but can't they use some goddamn common sense and not throw people out of games for non-malicious type plays like Young's? (See Enyi vs Wash St). Felt terrible for Young. Rule sucks as currently written
So is just the nfl that reviews to see if they should be kicked? Also on the punt they downed at the two, is it different in college where it’s just where the ball is and doesn’t matter if their body is in the end zone?

It's unfortunate for Young, but the rule is the rule and you have to pull up. In my opinion I don't think what Young did is what needs to be taken out of the game, his hit wasn't dirty, but it was illegal.

For as much as people hate the refs, do you really want them to also use their judgement on calls like that and determine if it was malicious or not? Imagine if that's the way the rule worked and they determined Young's hit was malicious, which they could do because it'd be completely subjective.
That is easier to say than to do. If OU's WR keeps his feet, that is a great hit by Young. But he didn't and feel right into Young's shoulder.

It’s a horrible rule. The idea is to change behavior but it penalizes guys making a textbook football tackle. A receiver gets tripped up and goes down or in a lot of cases actually ducks. You can start to make a perfect heads up tackle that turns into a targeting and there is nothing you can do about it.
Penalize and disqualify players that lead with the helmet. Penalize and disqualify offensive players that put their head down. The forcible contact to the head area on a defenseless player aspect is dumb as **** clearly written by someone who has never made a tackle in the game.
Young is making a center of mass tackle on Stoops. The way Stoops goes down and gets turned around it ends up at his head.

Young does his job. Just terrible luck on a horribly written rule.

You are half correct, but big hits can still ruin a guys career

Yes, if those things happened it wouldn't have been a penalty.
But you want players to pull up, how is Young supposed to know the WR is going to lose his footing? You see the issue with the defensive player? It's nearly impossible for the defensive player to react.

Have you ever played jai alai?

I never played jai alai, but I have seen a snippet of it on the intro to Miami Vice TV show during der Jan Hammer jam.
I did play football. and baseball. and soccer. a little bit of basketball and wrestling. I got straight A's still in school. No hockey. I was not Prom King. not even close.
Anyway, the reveiw should hae vindicated Young as not guilty of targeting. There are some good takes in this thread.....the offensive player was moving and changing direction during the end sequence and it is apparent in slow motion replay (I get the initial bad look to it and flag).....and Young was not intentionally targeting. It is called tackling.

It is not possible. Young is going into a tackle and then Stoops gets tripped up and goes down. You have to just keep making good football plays like that and hope the WR doesn’t go down or duck.
Terrible rule that needs to be gutted and remade. Stop treating a good tackle with a Receiver falling or putting his head down the same as a guy launching with his helmet as a weapon.

We as fans can feel bad about this call (although technically by the book was correct). But I felt even worse for Young. He's a kid playing in a dream game. And 2 plays into his dream game (after making a great play on the first play), he's summoned to the sidelines.

He was completely devastated. By the 4th quarter as ISU was making their comeback, it was nice to see him cheering on his teammates.

Young is a very aggressive player and is an immense talent. I personally think it's a shame to see such talent sit on the sidelines when many other divisions of the sport (NFL for one) only penalize 15 yards for the same play

Nearly impossible is not impossible, defenders do that all the time, but yes sometimes it's going to end up like this and that sucks.

They need to take into account the offensive player falling and twisting in unpredictable ways that the defender can't react to when they have already committing to making a tackle.

15 yard for targeting, sure. DQ? No way.

Compare that to a typical 15 yard face mask call against OU later in the game where the player damnn near ripped Purdy’s head off. Which play was more dangerous?

The fact that the OU player wasn’t dq’d for that ridiculously dirty play but young was shows how stupid the rules are.
