Targeting

Targeting just needs to go away. I get the safety aspect of it but when it is called so inconstantly, and never on a RB when they do it its time to find another way. Harvey's hit would have been clean if Minshew hadn't been tripped up from behind (OSU just recovered a fumble because their defender basically leaned in the same way). probably the only reason they went back and looked at the Uwa BS call was because of minshews helmet popping off, and never should have been called.

I don’t even think it really deserved one. It was an easy call based on the current rule but Harvey goes low and to the side. Minshew just lowers his head into that spot after being hit from behind. If Minshew doesn’t get hit from behind Harvey makes a pretty textbook tackle IMO. That’s one where you have to do something because the hit is dangerous but no amount of technique is going to stop it.

The tackler needs to see what he's tackling. He speared the guy - nothing more. If he tackles with his head up it's still a solid hit and he stays in the game.

IMO, "intent" should be the key.

Enyl had no intent to cause any harm whatsoever, and that is just plain obvious.

Nobody intends to give someone else a concussion the same way nobody intends to break their own neck by tackling with their head down.

It's simply a safety thing for both parties. It's subjectively objective but players have been getting kicked out all year long. Tackle with your head up - simple solution and a fundamental football skill.

I disagreed because that hit is what you dream of delivering. I played football to hit and get hit, if someone doesn't want to hit or get hit they need to find a different sport.

Completely disagree.

Leading with the crown of your helmet is not really an attempt to tackle someone, it's just trying to injure someone, and possibly even yourself. That WSU player did it shortly after Enyl got tossed and injured himself and could have broken his neck. There's no place for it.

Watched the replay on Cyclones.tv today. The first targeting call on Harvey was a good call. However, I'm surprised that they didn't make Minshew go through a concussion protocol as his head snapped back and the back of his head hit the ground hard.

His helmet was up until he sort of tried to avoid Minshew. No amount of teaching solves it. That’s what people need to accept. This is sports. It is a physical game and sometimes dangerous things happen and people get hurt. We should work to avoid it as much as possible but there is a point where we just need to accept the risks that come with it.

That hit was far from a spear.
