Takeaways from the spring game

Any additional information regarding Hufford and Miller injuries? Campbell stated they were both limited.

IMO Campbell knows this is a pivotal year in his coaching career. 21 was a flop and 22 was worse. His success has been based on a NFL quality back when at Toledo and ISU until last year when his top 2 backs were injured. If Jirehl is healthy I think we will rebound. The lack of interest in the Spring game on this site reflects the apathy created by two successive bad seasons. It’s interesting since his program has put more players into the NFL the past two years than any other period. Other words, for whatever reason, they under performed the past two years.

I’ll second this. The security on the south entrance was very rude. Got into a verbal argument with my dad to shake out his blanket.
Sounds more like a grumpy old ass not wanting to comply, I'm allowed to say this because I resemble the remark. In all seriousness would you want the possibility of a mass shooting because security didn't check a blanket?

Exactly correct. It's the world we live in now folks... get used to it. Do you want a little inconvenience getting through security.... or do you want someone sneaking an automatic weapon in and something really awful happening? Deal with it. They are just doing their jobs.

The one sentence in your post I agree with. Mostly, though Cartevious, AJ and Eli will have something to say about it.

Other that that, I’m fairly sure that a cloudy day with a high of 42 had more to do with the attendance than anything. Having been to a lot of Spring games—including once realizing I was sitting next to Matt Blair—I was actually impressed with the attendance yesterday.

Especially considering the weather.

Also doesn't help that Campbell states that he will treat it as a practice. I could see it being a lot bigger if we have a good season and high expectations and then if it is advertised and played up a bit as a fun event by the program.

I don't feel there is a "lack of interest" by fans, there is a lack of information. Media access to practice and players is limited. So to spoon feed fans info for the last 4-6 weeks isn't going to peak fans interest for a spring game.

Not really a complaint, it's just a reality of the approach the staff takes to spring. If ISU wins games, then it is all good with fans.

It would be interesting if a 2nd spring portal season contributes to how ALL coaches approach spring ball. Does it differ for a blue blood, new blood, average team or bad team?

Is it rude for security to check blankets? From what I’ve heard and seen over the years, seems like a pretty good idea. It may be a hassle, but not be rude.

Was there something about security that was particularly rude? I observed that security on the south entrance, seem to have an attitude, but in actuality, what they were checking, was probably a lot less than what they do, than just about every other event where they work.
I think the fact that this was not an isolated incident and more than one person reporting that gate security was rude is all that needs to be said.

We’re talking about a football practice in central Iowa that maybe 3,000-4,000 people attended in 30 degree weather. If it was a 60K home game that’s one thing. Blankets being brought in were by necessity, not choice.

I still fail to see why asking someone to shake out their blanket is rude.

I stated there is a lack of interest on this CF site about the Spring game not about the attendance at the game or support by those who attended. Basically, this is the only thread still alive and it’s mostly chatter about blanket inspection. I think Campbell has done a very good job at ISU and is among the top 3 including Majors and Bruce. If you don’t think this is a pivotal year for him, you should hope they do not finish below .500. Even though a coach is well liked, it can change entering year 9. Ask Jim Walden and Dan McCarney who were well liked but had to be replaced when things stagnated.

Lol. The “lack of interest” on this site has more to do with the fact that it wasn’t an actual “game”—and the fact that there was so little real information available afterwards.

I expect another burst when John Walters puts up his Spring ball CyCast.

Oh, and the fact that you’re comparing this team to McCarney’s and Rhoads’ slumps is ludicrous. Unlike either of those two, CMC’s recruiting hasn’t stagnated, and there is more and more talent pushing up from the bottom.

This team has more—far more—depth of talent from top to bottom than any I’ve seen in the past forty years.

Even last year at RB, it took TWO major injuries at the position to hamper the position, and that’s resolved by AJ Harris (>>> Deon Silas) and added maturity for Eli Sanders and Cartevious Norton. Not to mention the additions of Abu Sama and Carson Hansen, who will be in a similar learning and adjustment position to where Norton was last year.

I never said there wasn’t talent, in fact I said the past two years has probably put more Cyclones in the NFL than any other two years. I did say this next season is a pivotal year in Campbell’s career after two disappointing seasons. I hope they turn it around. He recognizes the situation or he wouldn’t have canned his friend and OC or the OL coach.

it's not, people just love to be miserable and think everything is an inconvenience to them....and those security staff members are literally doing their job
While I agree that it should be no big deal to comply with whatever security is asking, there was at least one commenter mentioning security being abrasive. Probably gets frustrating for security if they keep getting pushback on their requests. Also, they should avoid being abrasive. Unless you were present, hard to cast blame.
