Tailgating on Saturday

Ed Wilson on WHO last night said gameday should be okay in terms of rain, but that they expect a LOT of rain on Friday/Friday night. He even mentioned the likelihood of ISU's grass lots being too swampy. Haven't seen or heard anything from ISU yet, though.

Surely soon there'll be an announcement about an upcoming weather-related announcement.

A couple of years ago.... perhaps the UNI game we had a similar situation and with the grass lots closed they were parking Vet Med RVs in the old Kmart parking lot. Wasn’t ideal, but it worked.

Since Kmart has closed, they do not allow camping/tailgating in that lot anymore. That was our go to a few years ago, but last year when the game was rained out for the Kansas game they said all vehicles in there will be towed. They have since posted signs in the lot as well.

I am working some different areas that we have parked at in the past when we got kicked out of Vet Med. If they come through, I will keep everyone posted. Please do that same if you find something. I talked to the Haunted Forest, but they want $150 per vehicle and you can't pull in until Sat morning.

Understood. The game we tailgated there, Kmart was already closed for good and the no tailgating signs were up. Hopefully, exceptions can be made for inclement weather.

Do they park any RV's on the hard surfaces in Vet Med?

I don’t blame Kmart for not allowing parking. People have left messes. So if people want to be upset that parking isn’t allowed they need to blame their fellow game fans

I'm not sure K-Mart owns that land & building any more. Regardless, it's private property, and they are within their rights, even if they ARE letting it go to seed.

Yeah when I talked to Kmart last year, they said they don't own the land anymore and the land owner does not allow parking and has since put up the signs. I found out that the owner was from out of state, but they have since worked with the Ames PD and they will tow out of the lot. I was hoping that the university would work with them to see if they can make an exception, but the land owner throws out the liability factor they take on having ppl in their lot.

In the past they have allowed parking on the pavement only when the grass lots are open. Once they close the grass lots they put all vehicles on the pavement which pushes the RV's out of the lot. If you try to pull up there, they will deny you. We have even asked about the smaller gravel lot in the way back of the lot on rainy games and they deny that as well.

What I don't get is why the property owner doesn't hire a couple private security officers and charge per vehicle to park in the lot on game days, especially the ones where the grass lots are closed. Don't know what the lot capacity is but let's just guess 200 parking stalls (guessing there may be more?) at $25 a pop (more for a bus or RV) that's $5000, maybe out around $500 to hire a person or 2 to staff the lot that's not bad for a property that is costing them money to sit vacant right now.

Probably too big of a hassle for them to coordinate this but anyone with property within reasonable distance from Jack Trice with available parking instead of putting up "keep out" signs could be making a few extra bucks taking advantage when the grass lots are closed or probably even game days in general depending on proximity. There always will be enough people willing to pay a little bit to park closer when you have that many people in town.

the liability of the staff, cars, people, and before dealing with cash and depositing (probably not a local bank) they don't care about that money. Too many variables that can to turn unfavorable.

Know of a business that tried to purchase a parcel and found them hard to work so they found another piece of land

This is the entrance to the haunted forrest lot after the KU game last year. It got worse the farther in you went. There were a lot of stuck vehicles.

Kinnick can’t.

You know, the drainage of MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium is under-appreciated. It can rain like crazy all week so that the grass parking lots are closed. Yet, the field looks like it has had a slight drizzle, even after the game!

Well........probably doesn’t have anything to do with being a pretty good ag/engineering school. You know.....AHF, right?
