Tailgate questions

Hey guys! I'm new around here so forgive me if this has already been discussed. I received free tickets to both the NDSU and Iowa games this year and I was wondering what time do the parking lots open for tailgating. I don't have a parking pass so i'm assuming i'll be parking in the haunted forest grass lot. So if anybody knows when that opens and how much it costs I would be grateful!

the line for the Iowa game will start WAY before 6 hours prior to kickoff.

bring a sleeping bag.
 
Oh and a little advice for the Iowa game. If you are wanting to do some hardcore tailgating, and by hardcore I mean showing up as early as possible, I would recommend arriving well in advance. For that game lots will fill up very fast in the public lots.

Example: Showing up at 5 AM for the iowa game two years ago wasn't early enough to acquire, what I consider, prime real estate.
 
Thanks for the heads up! So for the Thursday game getting their by Noon should be good enough since I'm sure there will be a lot of people at work still. And then for the Iowa game I should plan on being in line by at least 3:00am if not sooner?

Noon for the Thursday game is ample time, in fact you could make it a little later and you'll be just fine. (this is a downfall to thursday games)

3-4 AM for the Iowa game would be a good goal to shoot for. You will still undoubtedly have to wait in line to get into a lot at that time, but you'll probably still be ok.
 
NDSU fan looking forward to the legendary ISU tailgate event. What are the rules and your advice as far as:

1. What lots are open to visiting fans? When do they open?
2. Glass containers, kegs, open fires/grills?
3. How long prior to kickoff is the tailgating shut down, if at all?
4. How long after the game can we hang out in the lots?
5. Are there porta-potties in the lots?
6. Any other good info you may have...

For the Thursday game, you'll be perfectly fine up to a couple hrs before the game. VERY late arriving crowd on Thursday nights. One of the reasons Thursday night games SUCK.

We saw sunrise waiting in an hour long line.

1. The public lots are the "G" lots, located at the south end of this map. "General public parking is located in the grass areas south of Jack Trice Stadium along South 16th Street. Limited
parking is located around Hilton Coliseum. All general public parking lots open 6 hours prior to kickoff. General public bringing recreational vehicles the night before football gamedays will be directed to park at the ISU Veterinary Medicine College (Lot 93)."

2. Officially, no glass bottles, kegs or open fires are allowed in parking areas. Grills and tents are allowed, but you're limited to the space directly around your vehicle. "Please limit your tailgating to one parking space and do not block the path for other vehicles to park. Remember to clean up your area before departing. No glass bottles, kegs or open fires are allowed in parking lots. Tents can be no larger than 10’x10’."

3. Tailgating is not shut down at all. There are always people that show up without tickets, pay to park, and just tailgate.

4. Normally, you can stay a few hours after the game. The only overnight stays usually happen in the donor RV lots.

5. Portable "facilities" are available.

6. Misc: Don't be a jerk, and you shouldn't get treated poorly. ISU fans enjoy drinking/socializing with fans from most schools, because hey -- booze is booze.
 
Officially, no beer bongs either. Though that doesn't stop us from breaking them out inside a tailgate bus. Shhh!
 
The only tailgates where I have really seen things get too physical were a few Iowa/ISU tailgates. Sometimes they can get heated. Especially when you have a jack*** hawk fan sit in your tailgate, steal your beer, and refuse to leave.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I may not stumble away from our tailgating set-up, but if I do, I hope to run into some of you and we can discuss (read: bong and shotgun beers) the finer points of ISU and NDSU football.
 
I'm still curious about this ISU-Iowa game and parking. Say I want to have a good spot right in between Hilton and CY Stephens - in that grass area. Should I be there at 4:00 to get a spot like that? If they don't even park till 5:00 AM will I just be sitting in line on that entry street with a bunch of cars waiting to pull in? Do lines of cars just build up around the general parking lots before they start parking for a game like this?

If you get there at 5:00, you'll be fine. Probably even 5:30 or 6:00. I don't think the lots north of Center Drive are nearly as well-known, just because of their distance from the stadium compared to the G lots on the south end.

The only time they'll let people in early is if traffic flow is disrupted...but that's mainly a problem for just G2 and G3.
