T Tech to hire,..........yawn, snore

So what are Tech fans reaction to this hire?

I spoke to the die hard I know. His initial thought was "okay, I guess". He really thought they were going to hire Dykes Junior or Traylor. So a bit disappointed at first.

After a day to think about it, he sees the concept. It's all about recruiting, Jimmys and Joes, 100%. Historically, Techs coaches have not really played nice at all with the Texas HS coaches association (other than Tuberville) and thus they have struggled getting recruits to Lubbock. So the general strategy on this hire is he will bring in the HS coaches strongly, bring in good recruits, and that gives them a chance to compete in the new Big12. Get recruits closer to UT and Aggie, way better than TCU or Baylor or Houston. Roughly the OSU level. That alone should put you top half of new Big12 even with so-so coaching.

Can he coach? Can he run a P5 program? Can he develop kids? All TBD, but they look at recruiting as the foundation. And honestly, I think it makes sense, especially given their history. Will they give him enough time? That is the question.

I like it. Tech needed to shake things up, build their own thing. You have to want to be at Tech, you have to get the place to do well there. These retread guys and flavor of the month stuff....they did all that. This dude knows the state, and he wants that job.

Remember when Briles was fired at BU, and many posters here said they would flounder for years to come, but then they were playing in the Big 12 championship game in Rhule's third season? Remember when many posters here said that after Rhule left, BU would flounder for years to come, but in Aranda's 2nd year, BU is doing well?

As posted earlier, McGuire was/is a big part of that "not floundering for years" aspect, in that he kept the good recruits coming during the coaching transitions, which is not an easy task. He was likely going to get other offers at the end of this season. Given his background, I think he probably understands Tech culture, and he's not going to alienate the Lubbock/TT community like Wells did.

There is no doubt some risk, as he doesn't have college head coach experience, so we'll see. But you gotta have some players to win, and Wells was not doing great in that area. I think McGuire will get good recruits, so well see if he can assemble a staff that can coach them.

Very early on in the Briles thing I think some may have foolishly thought there would be some sort of negative consequence or sanction for running a recently broken up rape ring.

Due to his Texas high school ties which are broad and deep, this TxT hire makes sense because he can recruit Texans to a Texas school that is hard to recruit to. OU tried to hire him for this very reason, more than once.

Now, Texas itself has always recruited well but generally sucked post-Mack Brown. We'll have to see if this guy can coach them up or not. One of his first recruits was a youngster thought to be headed to K-State.

This hire makes a lot of sense if you are thinking long-term. A lot like the Beard hire, if he had been loyal.

If this guy works out? He's probably there for life.

Texas should actually hire someone similar to this if they want to turn their program around.

Talent and culture will change, and he will want to be there.

McGuire was no stranger to Tech fans or really anyone who even remotely follows CFB. He was the key to Matt Rhule's success at Baylor, a big part of Aranda's success, Texas offered him a job, Oklahoma offered him a job, Kingsbury offered him a job, Matt Wells offered him a job. He was a highly coveted hire for his recruiting in the best HS football state in the nation.

Tech fans had it narrowed down to Traylor or McGuire from the day Wells was fired. Tech's AD said he was looking for a coach with strong ties to Texas and Texas HS recruiting, and that narrowed the field down to two guys. Traylor said no, he's waiting for UT or A&M to open up, which is fine, best of luck to him. McGuire asked for the job and got it.

He's reinvigorated the fanbase who were headed toward apathy under Wells. He's already landed multiple recruits, including a 4* DE who was committed to Baylor. Leach was a terrible recruiter, Kingsbury openly admitted he hated recruiting college, Wells gave up HS recruiting and went all-in on the transfer portal.

McGuire is the first Texas Tech HC that actually cares about recruiting in decades.

oh Hey bro thanks for stopping by. Appreesh your out of nowhere response. Later dude. Stay awesome bruh.
You're welcome, but when some dude posts something dumb about a Coach in Texas that is VERY well known and LIKED in Texas, I have to call out the ignorance.

The Big12 is in for so many changes the next 2 or 3 years...just keeping Campbell moves us up higher on the food chain...we'll be like Roman Reigns in WWE...Head of the Table.
...Well, it's good to dream anyway. :)
