Switching Cell Phone Plans

Any new opinions on current cell phone plans? I'm looking to start a new plan with my wife, we currently both have Verizon (she's on her parents' plan). I'm grandfathered in with unlimited data (of which I use ~11 GB/month), but don't necessarily need it. She only uses ~3 GB/month.

I've been looking & the top 2 we're considering are Verizon's 12GB plan & AT&T's 15GB plan which are pretty much the same price. We're looking at getting a Galaxy S6 & an iPhone 6. Only real reason I'm not thinking Sprint is because they seem to be a distant 3rd in terms of speed on almost every test I've seen.

Anyone have experience with AT&T? I went to an AT&T store last night at about 7:15 & they straight up told me they didn't have time to see me before they close... I usually do everything online, but we would have to port our numbers & deal with an ETF for her line so I think it'll be easier to handle in store.

I switched to AT&T and never had any issues with them outside of the costs. My employer now pays for my plan so I am thinking about switching over to T-Mobile to get the 3 upgrades a year and the free international roaming/calling.

Probably a dumb question but if your employer pays for your plan and you have good coverage why would you switch to Tmobile? I have Tmobile and I like the free international data/calling but the other 50 weeks of the year I'd like to have LTE.

Purely for the fact to get a new phone every 4 months. That's the only real reason. Plus they'll pay for the Unlimited TMobile Plan anyway so I am not worried about data. Plus I get a unlimited mobile wifi hotspot from Verizon so if I ever run out of 4G or don't have a signal, I just pop that sucker on.

Have you researched the cost of upgrading every 4 months? What are the details? I really don't have a clue but it sounds too good to be true.

Having the verizon hotspot would be handy.

Buy new phone for $600
Finance that for 18 months at $34/month plus the $10/month jump charge

6 months later you want a new phone that costs $600

Finance that for 18 months at $34/month plus the $10/month jump charge

So if my math is correct you're paying $528/year to get a new phone $600 every 6 months?

I've been waiting to upgrade my Nexus 5 and trying to decide if it makes sense to just buy it outright or not.

Yep basically. And my company would pay all that. Still debating if it is worth it though. I am waiting for this new round of phones from all these companies to come out to see which carriers have them.

I live in Holton (rural), Kansas; it is outside of their "enrollment area" so I fibbed and used a neighboring zip code that did qualify.

We do have the Nexus 6's, they are very nice. Had the Nexus 4's before these. We didn't have a choice though, the only phone that works on the Fi network right now is the Nexus 6.

The biggest thing I love is whenever I am on Wi-Fi at home I have a great signal, our home is in a network dead spot.

Also, the price is damn cheap, my total bill last month was $27.

I agree, I am pretty confident the new Nexus 5 would be compatible. Even after owning the Nexus 6 for a while, I think I would prefer the phone to be smaller, some days the size can be annoying.
 
I'm also on Fi and love it. Coverage isn't as good as it was with Verizon but still pretty good. I'm loving my Nexus 6 even though I broke the screen 4 days after I got it:(

Project Fi kinda looks like a game changer. No wonder there were all those Apple rumors doing something similar this month that they came out and denied. If I wasn't a complete Apple ecosystem at home, I think I would give that a try before anything else. Unless my employer is paying and I get a phone upgrade every few months.
 
Be careful with US Cellular. They told me our plan was outdated and had to change. When I hesitated they said I could upgrade one more time on the old plan. They may not tell you that unless you ask.
 
Thinking about getting a smart phone, went and talked to Verizon they wanted about 240 dollars a year to add a phone and supply the phone. How is the best way to get a smart phone and then just take it in and add it to the existing plan? What do I need to check to make sure it works with the Verizon network.TIA

I've usually bought newer phones on Ebay. Just read the description closely, they are very accurate 9 times out of 10. They usually list an ESN that you can check with Verizon to see if it's eligible for their service.

I have 2 phones, one on AT&T and one on USCell.

USCell is good in Iowa as long as you're not deep inside buildings. AT&T is fine in the major areas of Ames, had issues with low spots.

Verizon is good everywhere, but like everyone has said, prices are high.

Going back to Verizon on the one, and ditching AT&T.

IPhone 6 and Galaxy Note 3.
