While the offense definitely should have scored at least 10 more points, it is his first game in this position.
But overall, the offense looked much better with Sturdy at the help. Nearly every drive passed midfield. And 3-outs were at a minimum compared to normal. Overall very happy with Sturdy thus far. Curious to see how we approach OU

I have a feeling that OU will be blitzing Lanning, but more like a run blitz to keep him in the pocket, because that is where he hurt Texas....extending plays.
Watch for OU to try and keep Lanning in the pocket and make him throw to win the game....a lot of run blitzes IMO.

Texas Blitzed almost every down and left the middle of the field open.
Texas also played Nickel almost the entire game (either 3-3-5 or 4-2-5). In the first quarter Texas just straight up blitzed and left lanes for Lanning to run through. From the 2nd quarter on when Texas blitzed they did what I call "slow blitz" which is where they bring the extra guys but they come controlled in their lanes and kind of spy the QB.
1 game, short week to prepare...I was impressed.

I was impressed with the seamless deployment of different offensive packages to match what the OC wanted to run. Perhaps the same pages from the old playbook, but great situational control with less than a week to put things together.
There were some of those quick outs, but in my very amateur observation, they were more successful. Why were they more successful? I would guess that it's because they were only called when there was a pattern of the D loading up the box and blitzing, it was situational and appropriately situational.
The difference between Study's use of screens and Mangino's is that Sturdy established the inside run, which then sets the defense up for an easy screen. Mangino used screens as a feature, where Sturdy takes what you give him. Sam never put the same zip on the ball that Joel does either. I always felt, at least in baseball, if you actively tried to compensate your throwing motion for the smaller throwing distance, you end up throwing inconsistently. I wonder if that isn't the case with Sam. Joel throws with little touch most of the time, much like say a Brett Favre. He can still throw the touch passes like his TD against Texas, but typically he's rocket firing that baby every throw. Faster the ball gets to the screen the less time the defense has to close up those running alleys.
Sturdy is off to a good start, and he found some things that work. However, he will be thrown into the fire for his second game this Saturday. OU is ranked 23rd in scoring defense (for reference, UT is ranked 89th).
