Student Section

But really, I think the students should take advantage of Iowa State having a very quality basketball program under Fred Hoiberg, and especially how the Big 12 is this year. Every game is a quality matchup, even against Texas freaking Tech.

I would just sell the upper deck of the student section as assigned seating for students. That way if you don't want to worry about not getting a seat, you can still have one. Keep the lower sections as general admission so any student that chooses to wait in line is still rewarded.

My kid would love that, if they could do it in the all-sports too as he goes to lots of stuff besides football and men's basketball. His major seems to love putting classes until 5:00, and he is always worried about not getting into games like Iowa and Kansas. Of course you have to somehow arrange seating with your friends.

Upper deck student section is less than 1000 seats. But based on overselling, an entirely empty upper deck would represent about 1400 tickets unused. I would estimate around 1200-1300 went unused for this Texas game.

Edit: I say this not to discredit your post. Your points are fine. It just doesn't require exaggeration and/or hyperbole to make the point. 1400 tickets for Hilton represents 10 percent of total attendance. My comment was more one of clarification than anything else.

I didn't mean to exaggerate and I get your point. I guess its not thousands but thousand and then some.

As a student at the game, I too was disappointed by the attendance. The only things I can think of tonight are 1) there were a couple night exams (which shouldn't be that many) and 2) the die hards go to the game, the ones on the fence can stay home and have a better view then the balcony for less work ie. Waiting in line/ driving there/ fighting traffic. Not everyone lives within walking distance. (yes college kids are lazy.) Coming to Ames for the games is something out of towners look forward too as a "treat" I think some college kids take the Ames/hilton experience for granted.

Quick glance at night exam schedule, they had them in Engineering 160, Psych 230, and SCM 301. Engineering 160 could be a lot of people, not sure about the others.

If these are the reasons students aren't coming, then they really need to shrink the student section and get people in the balcony that actually appreciate the chance to watch one to the best teams in the country.

Don't know if this has already been said but I think the single file line to get into the games is a factor. Before, rushing into Hilton with a herd of students while battling for the best seat possible was really exciting. Now, people see the line and immediately decide that it would be much easier to watch the game on TV then wait in that garbage line.

This excuse and others like it need to stop. The student section has had horrible attendance for awhile now so these issues don't even come close to being a factor.

Psych 230 is developmental psychology. A large class that I believe has no prerequisite. It is a rather popular class for a variety of majors, but I don't believe it is significant enough to be a real reason for lack of attendance.

The reason is students who have tickets are prioritizing other things over attending the game. It is that simple. There is no easy excuse beyond that. No dance marathon, or tests, or group projects are going to be the leading cause of a lack of student attendance. Students are just choosing not to go to games. It is disheartening. But I don't think there is a great solution to getting them to attend. The next best thing is to try and make it so the seats don't go to waste.

sad really, we are having one of the best seasons in school history and we have that pathetic eye soar of empty seats. I don't blame the students 100% though. I blame part of it on policy. So they have a single file line to go through just get in the building? IMO, we should never have a situation where students have to wait hours before tip off to get in to get a decent seat but also with the chance of getting turned away. This isn't Duke, it is colder up here. I know cold wasn't a factor tonight, but if a student was in that situation of waiting when it is cold, I'm sure it wasn't a great experience and it soured them on coming again. Cold, waiting, single file lines, over selling ect... We need to change the policy. Maybe they can set up a system where seniors with the most scans get assigned the best seats or something like that.

This is the only other picture I have of the fans (specifically the upper deck). It was taken at the first media timeout. There are still holes. And you can kind of see the corner section. And it still is not filled in.

traffic was horrible on the way in, there were still people filing in after the first media time out. For being an early 6 pm tip, people coming from elsewhere like Des Moines did their best to get there after work. Once arriving in Ames, traffic congestion on the way to Hilton was a major problem. So I don't think it is fair to take a shot at the non students who had to drive from far away for a 6 pm tip.

You know it's a problem when John Walters says on air something like, "these students need a kick in the rear." The crowd was good tonight I thought. But still gotta get that student section filled.

sorry jordan I think you're wrong. I pretty much did a 360 around the upper balcony and didn't see a lot of empty seats, until the student section seats....

BTW you're an idiot

Idiots like me shouldn't post anymore on this subject, I suppose, but I just wanted to add that in reference to my initiated thread from Saturday's game....tonight's game was much better! Kudos to the students!!! Provided energy and great atmosphere for our team. And, the rest of the crowd, for getting loud, standing, chanting. That's more what I'm talking about! And, yes, there WERE chants like "lets go state" near the conclusion of several timeouts. Also more music. Either there was some great leadership by the students on this and/or the cheerleaders plus even the sound system guy did better at getting people going. I have no idea what the best solution is with respect to the student ticket sales. I, too, wish it could be resolved. But for my wish for there to be more energy in the building last night, consider it granted. Thanks to the students and all the fans. See you at the WV game!

Completely agree. There weren't hardly any empty seats anywhere except for student section.

Lots of discussion by people around us about the empty seats.

This is exactly true. Although I graduated already, I talked with some friends who are still in school and none of them were having it waiting several hours in the freezing cold for the Iowa and KU games when a bunch of people are just going to budge right before the doors open. The best you get is the upper section of the lower bowl. They are all 21 and decided to just go to the bars to watch the games where they can be warm and drink. It was great that people camped out but now a group of students are reluctant to go now since they are afraid of waiting multiple hours for nose bleeds or not even get in..even though lately that isn't true since we barely fill the lower bowl.

I don't think that most of us are ragging on the students who are on this board and do attend regularly. We also understand that students can't attend every single game. It's more about venting frustration with the system that allows this to happen on a consistent basis. I know many students who are loyal fans are frustrated, too.

Its funny that the students who whined to Pollard because they didn't get into the Iowa game since they got there so late are probably a majority of the students who don't show up for any other games.

Not sure about the empty seats, but the crowd seemed to be into the game much more than Saturday.......I guess the bashing on CF helped

2 things:

There were a lot of empty seats in the other sections, up until the first timeout, then everything filled in pretty well.

What really pisses me off is the kids who sit front row and dont do anything. The kids on our side basically stood there the whole game and just watched.

I know a lot of people who didn't show up tonight because of studying, although I don't think that is much of an excuse. Also, on those weekend games, especially the early ones, students usually don't show up because they are hung over. I'm not saying it's right, but it's what happens.

What a bunch of *******. You have all week to study. Also: a hangover? Get of bed, make a Bloody Mary or 5, and rub some ******* dirt on it. You're in college. The best way to kill a hangover, in the short term, is to lay back into the booze immediately.

The system is only a problem for two games; KU and Iowa. For every other game this season (besides maybe Michigan) you could show up when the doors open and have a seat. The only thing is if you want a "good" seat you have to get there earlier. But is there really a bad seat in the house? Obviously school takes precedent, but I don't feel bad for the people who don't go simply because they have to wait awhile. Bottom line is if students filled the student section every night we wouldn't need to oversell it, and we wouldn't have the problem of turning people away (which I believe happened once).
