The other "I" states aren't even in freaking BCS conferences. If we start winning, esp. in football and men's hoops, our identity will take care of itself. Trust me, people on the coasts will never distinguish Iowa, Indiana, Illinois or Idaho, or for that matter, Iowa State Hawkeyes from Iowa Cyclones.. (seriously, had a guy in Carmel, Ca ask me if we were the hawkeyes when he saw my ISU shirt on). Sometimes Ohio is confused with Iowa. Don't let the average americans' stupidity geographically determine how we design our logo.
I was in my 3rd yr. at ISU when the new logo was implemented. It was ok, a unique way to combine the bird (Cy) and a cyclone... but over time I've come to realize it is way to busy, and required more colors than what our official school colors were. The traditional "big names" in college sports seemed to have more simple logo's, even with a complicated mascot. You don't see wolverines all over Michigan attire. You don't see a drunk punching irishman on Notre Dame helmets nor a prairie wagon on OU helmets. Look at Va Tech, they are the hokies (turkey?), have a VT on the helmet, but yet have a walking mascot that is some sort of bird (see the college entrance songs thread in the general college section). The new "I-State" has really grown on me... it's not mind blowingly unique, but more simple and bringing back the richer cardinal is fantastic. You can't keep to stupid current logo with the change in uniforms. Cripes, I thought ISU has good departments in fashion and textiles. Let's show it. Geesh.
