Start Bench Cut: RB

Very hard. Two offensive players of the years in an elite conference. But I would choose Breece only because of 50 rushing TDS to 36. His five star comment after beating Texas was icing on the cake.

This is fun to watch. Hlas is great and then Randy's not bad.

Coach Mac is the shot in the arm I need in the morning.

Troy might not have been the most physically talented RB in ISU history, but he clearly was the toughest. Hard to believe how many carriers and hits he took each game without getting injured or worn down.

What’s interesting about the video is how different the offense was back in Troy’s days. The QB was under center and the offense lined up to run the ball. There was no deception. This suited Troy’s running style. I sincerely doubt Troy could put up the same kind of numbers in today’s scheme. Likewise, I doubt that Breece could have taken the pounding that Troy took without getting injured or worn down. As a result, it makes it very difficult to compare the two players and label one as better than the other. I think it depends in part of the offensive scheme. Case in point, once Troy was placed in an NFL offensive scheme with the Saints, his effectiveness was diminished.

I’d start Breece. The most talented of the group. I’d have David Montgomery as my backup. DM is way to good of a leader and glue guy to cut.

Yes that means I’d have to cut arguably the best one of the group. But if I’m building a team I’m not just picking the best guys. Then you’d end up with a roster like Texas

They weren’t great still. He also had defenses knowing he was going to run it all the time and they still couldn’t stop him. And there were some stout defenses he wrecked. Anybody not putting Troy #1 is either too young or has recency bias.

If you are doing more than just handing it to the running back an offense I don’t know how you can pick Davis. Breece was an all around back. Troy was a great runner of the football. Third down and medium/long comes around? Give me Breece all day every day. The worth of a running back doesn’t lay just on how well he runs with the ball in his hands, and Breece was just as good as Troy at even that.

Start Montgomery
Bench Breece
Cut Troy

I like the idea of gashing the defense with David and then letting Breece lull them to sleep for long runs.

Had to cut one of them and Troy isn't really a modern style back.

I would agree Troy isn't a modern, multi-use back, but if you look at him in the context of when he played, he was an absolute monster without a peer. People that think our OL was great back then are misremembering how often he had to plow his way through guys in the backfield to make something out of nothing. It may have been slightly better than recent years, but that says more about recent years OL than the 90s.

Montgomery and Breece are certainly great backs and more multi-dimensional; David with blocking and Breece with receiving. Both make better NFL backs than Davis ever could have. But, I think in the context of their respective eras, Davis was without question the best college running back we've ever had.

You also have to remember and factor in that Breece and David were surrounded by the best players we've ever had. Troy was the team. We had at least one elite WR and TE for each of Breece and David, as well as some of our strongest QB play, especially for Breece.

Now, once you get to David and Breece, it gets a bit harder as they are clearly in the same era but had a bit different toolsets. I would give the nod to Breece as I think he's both the better modern, multi-use back and he had arguably a worse OL than David. Montgomery could break tackles better, but Breece had the ability to avoid more of them to begin with and is a better receiver.
