Start Bench Cut: RB

Not an easy choice here, no real wrong answers either. I'd go Davis, Hall Montgomery.

Troy - back to back 2000+ yd seasons being the only threat on offense and still getting 5.5 yds per carry. Almost 750 rushes in those two years! One tough SOB.
Breece - probably the most talented. His TD streak is obviously a great stat. Just think what he could have done with even an average offensive line.
David - one of my favorite Cyclones of all time. One of the best pics I've ever seen was David vs TCU in the 14-7 W in 2017. Three players looking at him, all on the ground.

Does anybody have personal memories of the TD Yard-O-Meter? Or connections to the people who operated it?

I thought it was in the upper deck student section, but in these videos, I see that it was near the 30 yard line closest to the SE hillside. I would love to hear more of the story of how it got started and what reaction they got about it. For instance, did Troy himself pay attention to it? Or his linemen?

This is so tough. Troy is one of the best running backs in college football history and not only did what he did during a time when running the ball was the number one option for offenses, he did it when everyone knew he was getting the ball. Tough not to go with him. Also was ISU’s only heisman finalist, and should have been the heisman winner. **** Danny Wuerfel.

David broke the NCAA record for broken tackles in a season and followed that up but either doing it again or almost doing it again. He played behind an atrocious offensive line his whole career and still put up all conference numbers. If he had played behind a better oline, his numbers would have been extraordinary. I think because Breece was so good, people forget just how amazing David really was.

Breece is the best athlete between the three, and the best all around back. He’s the fastest, and also the best receiver. He doesn’t break tackles like David or Troy, but he makes people miss with his deceptive speed and agility.

Start: Breece
Bench: David
Cut: Troy (this seems so wrong)

If those three all came in coming out of high school today, I’m not sure ISU would throw the ball all game. Judging by how their pro careers went, Troy is the least talented of the bunch, but had the best college career.

Depends on the quality of the OL. Troy had way better OL than David and Breece.
They weren’t great still. He also had defenses knowing he was going to run it all the time and they still couldn’t stop him. And there were some stout defenses he wrecked. Anybody not putting Troy #1 is either too young or has recency bias.

Yes, personal experience/memories.

I wonder, looking back were there as many false start, holding, motion penalties as there are now. We've lost a lot of yards/plays recently because of that.

Breece was like a cheat code for offense getting you 60+ yard plays.

If I needed a 4th and one I think DM is the best I’ve ever seen. Also an entire career with no fumbles that weren’t blown calls.

Yet TD is obviously TD.

I could see all three being the pick depending on the team, but I’d probably go Breece for the big play.

Not sure how you can pick anyone but Troy Davis to start.
Pretty easy. Hall has more speed than both Davis and Montgomery and it's not even close. If Hall had been given the same number of carries as Davis, he would have surpassed 2000 yards as well. Troy Davis had 747 carries in just two years. Hall had 718 carries in three years. Average yards per carry were similar as well, 5.6 for Davis, 5.5 for Hall. Hall was more of a home run threat every time he touched the ball than Troy was. Troy had more 20 and 30 yard runs. Hall could have likely scored on some of those because of his speed. Hall had crap OLs every year but one, while Troy ran behind some pretty good OLs.

Breece absolutely was more of a receiving threat than Troy and David.

He was one of the bigger receiving threats in NFL the first few games and Jets fans didn’t even realize he could get the same huge plays off handoffs yet. Right out of the gate he was making huge nfl receiving plays, took a few weeks for the rushing big plays.

What about Dexter Green?
Dexter was right up there with these three for sure. All-American and two time 1st team all conference.

Dont forget that ISU has had some great backs that were every bit as good as the three being mentioned. My fav will always be Dwayne Crutchfield. That was the best power/speed back we’ve ever had.

Breece had one of the best ISU QB’s of all-time throwing to one of the best TE’s of all time and a top 10 receiver of all-time. Defenses didn’t have to worry about any of that with Davis. That’s the difference.

Davis was the ONLY reason to go to games back then, and stay to the end. Go into a pile and somehow come out heading downfield, breaking tackles and running over guys. No speed so someone would run him down. Nor could he catch the ball.

So Hall gets my vote, for being the most talented. Montgomery honorable mention for what he meant setting the culture for ISU, working hard aways to improve and be an example, and returning ISU to relevance. Amazing balance, taking a hit and staying upright for a few more yards.

Crutchfield didn't seem to understand he was supposed to run through a hole, he just ran over people, often his own.

If voting GOAT, hard leave Green out of consideration, he was a great talent, era was so different it's hard to compare. And then there's Amundson, tremendous all around athlete. But if CF is doing the voting NM, most weren't born yet.

Or simply has a difference of opinion. Troy was my hero and why I fell in love with ISU Football. My take is more about how they fit together.
