I saw so many people saying this show feels like season 5 of Rebels, that I decided I wanted to finish up watching clone wars and get to rebels before watching Ahsoka
Probably a wise decision. We had no investment into these characters so understandably this is probably like starting a new show well after it’s established itself and saying “well I don’t understand it so therefore it sucks”. I’m going to watch this to completion for sure because I want to see where the Thrawn storyline goes. But right now it’s a lot more similar to Kenobi than it is to Andor or the Mandalorian in my view.
I'm 100% with you, just probably worse. Granted, it is only two episodes, but I found the first two episodes of Ahsoka to be borderline atrocious and I'm both a Rebels fan and a fan of the Ahsoka character. While I was a big fan of the casting of Rosario Dawson in the character at first, I've found her to be terrible as the character from the start, to the point that it doesn't even feel like the same character as in the animated series. Why is she walking around so slow and stoic all the time???? Also, if I had a dime for every time she stands there and crosses her arms, I'd be a rich man. It drives me crazy. None of that is Ahsoka from the animated series either. Don't get me started on her atrocious dialogue they give her as well. With all that said, none of these are even the greatest sin of the actress and the writers. The greatest sin is that they all have created a fairly unlikeable character so far. Isn't this an Ahsoka show?? Aren't I supposed to be rooting for her rather than sitting there in complete apathy? Sabine doesn't feel like the same character either, while I'd call Hera decent so far.
Moving past the characters themselves, I've just found the writing and dialogue all around of the series to be so so bad. I've been bored to death so far in a show with lightsaber fights. Why are we searching for ancient artifacts to find an Grand Admiral who disappeared like what 15 years ago??? It reminded me of the whole Rise of Skywalker Death Star thingamajiggy map/compass whatever. How did Sabine survive a lightsaber in the gut when we've already seen others in Star Wars die from the exact same wound?? I could go on and on with many others but I'll spare you all.
Anyway, I'm glad some people seem to be liking this show so far, but I'm just not one of them unfortunately. I'm sitting here super disappointed right now, especially after Andor set the bar so high for me and reignited my love of Star Wars. Mandalorian S3 then restarted the decline and Ahsoka is plummeting it right now.
All this is so sad because I've always been such a big Star Wars fan through all the good and the bad and I'm finally getting sucked of that joy. It doesn't help that I've gotten into Star Trek within the past 15 years and that franchise is on the opposite trajectory. I've been watching the latest season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds lately, which has been outstanding in all facets, and then I watch something like Ahsoka and its almost laughable to compare the writing between the two franchises. Oy vey......
Old man moment: I've been watching Disney+ shows while I do dishes or other chores around the house and I change my audio to the Descriptive Audio which is used for the visually impaired. This makes the show/movie more like an audiobook where the character actions are narrated, it's a great lifehack if you want to catch-up on a series.
Anyways, something I found fascinating about Ahsoka is that the audio descriptive service calls the villains "False Jedi" rather than "Sith" when those characters are on-screen. They also noted that the blonde-apprentice has an "orange-red" lightsaber rather than just a red lightsaber which we associate with the Sith.

I watched the first episode with my girls last night and really liked it but I'm easy to please. I'm always looking for things that I'm into that I can watch with my girls and this show has a lot of cool women characters in it so that helps them get into it.
It's not the best Star Wars ever but I would definitely put it above Kenobi and Book of Boba based on the first episode at least. Production is great and feels very cinematic. Not anything like Andor but I didn't expect it to be and I'm fine with that.

I'm with you. I watched all of Rebels so I'm getting some good stuff but I did think if you hadn't seen it the story would be almost incomprehensible.
My biggest thing is that this is so dour right now. Rebels/Clone Wars tackled some big themes but the whole time you got the impression that Ahsoka loved being a Jedi and kicking ass. Later on Sabine seemed to love being a Mandalorian and fighting on the good side. Now maybe they'll rediscover that but has anybody cracked one smile in this show? I mean it looks great, I love the bad guys, but man this show is taking itself way too seriously right now.
I have none of the background on this show, so I come in with no preconceived notions or expectations, but this is where I'm at. Minus watching it with daughters. Ive only watched one episode so far but it looks great and I'm intrigued by the villains. Right now I'd have it ranked where you have it but we will see where it goes from here!
Some of it has been a little confusing but maybe it will be explained? The whole map thing I have some questions about but maybe I just missed it on first watch.
I assume a lot of the sadness is from losing the friend they are looking for? I do agree that without having watched those other shows some of the 1st episode was a little confusing
Are any of the characters very likable right now? Maybe Hera??? I've found both Ahsoka and Sabine to be boring and unlikable so far, which just stinks.
1 other point. I've learned with all the Disney shows (Star Wars and Marvel) to never over react to the 1st couple episodes because some I've started off not liking and by the end were some of the best and some started out great and became train wrecks so I like to reserve too much judgement until the season is over.
Ezra has been gone for like 14 years based on the timeline. Sabine was like 20 when he left and is like in her mid 30s now I think. Possible but man.
Which one started great and became train wrecks? Which ones started bad and became good? Granted I'm on the record, I don't think Disney knows how to make TV shows for Disney+. I think they honestly suck at it and it's hurt the brand of both Marvel and Star Wars.
Filoni has repeatedly said Ahsoka is his Gandalf. But guess what, Gandalf was a little goofy and cracked jokes and was a pretty fun dude at times.
I think Ahsoka has the whole Jedi Master thing going on. Seems like they always make older Jedi stoic and kinda boring. She has seemed to follow that typical arc from young brash padawan to stoic jedi master from Clone Wars to Rebels to where she is at now.
Like I said, I have very little of the background of this show.
I thought Ms Marvel started really strong and then became a mess for awhile. Last episode was solid but a lot of the middle stunk.
I thought WandaVision really drug on for a bit and then ended up being amazing
Many have called her portrayal spot on to the character. With Filoni involved, there's no way he would let Dawson go too far afield with it. Also, just google Ahsoka crossed arms and you'll get plenty screen shots from Clones Wars and Rebels where she is doing just that. It's her thing.
The timeline was a bit fuzzy in this one as they seemed to go well out of their way to not actually nail it down. All we know is it does happen after Mando S2Ep5, which is roughly 5-6 years after ROTJ, but it may actually pre-date her appearance in S3. The end of Season 4 of Rebels happens during BBY 0 and Ezra and Thrawn disappear just prior to the Battle of Yavin.. But the end of Episode 2 is literally a recreation of the epilogue scene of Rebels that puts it around 5 years after the Battle of Endor, so Thrawn and Ezra have been missing right around 10 years.
I groaned about the map Macguffin as hard as anyone, but this one was not nearly as egregious as the Rise of Skywalker one. And it is going to end up being less a map to Thrawn specifically, but instructions to get to the galaxy he ended up in.
Lightsaber wounds have apparently become less fatal since Qui Gon. Two people in Obi-wan lived and Sabine's was at least off to the side where it wouldn't have been instant death if she received immediate medical treatment.
I've had the same thought. Only thing I can think off is it is a record of antient space whale migratory behavior. Which would be really funny if there was a secret temple built by essentially marine biologists.
Somewhere I found them described as "Dark Jedi" which is a cool concept since we have Light Jedi (Yoda, Kenobi) and Grey Jedi (Ahsoka) already. I also noticed that the blonde apprentice has a padiwan braid like Anaken did in the prequels.

And the most infamous of all, Maul surviving getting cut in half and falling down a shaft.
Dark Jedi or at least Dark Grey Jedi. Dark Jedi were in lots of the books and not all were Sith. Sith were a very specific sect of dark Force users that followed a specific code. Balan is a former Temple trained Jedi and now is a mercenary. He clearly doesn't follow the path of the Light, but isn't completely evil, hence the orangish lightsaber.
