There have always been successful one-dimensional players in major college basketball. Ideally, they'd be better-rounded, but role-players are usually somewhat one-dimensional.

kay icSyu I won't argue with you. I'm just stating that this is an issue with this particular player that is hoped to be changed or resolved. And part of this is because of the player not wanting to draw contact.
A post was made on this board saying this, and I am giving him a pat on the back and saying he is right-on according to what is happening inside the program. This is all. think what you want. no problem here.
Oh and by the way. According to several experienced coaches who attended the Kansas game this was the number one discussion for change for the cyclones. :smile:

I have never heard that Staiger was to be a role-player before. If he is, thats fine, but role-players don't normally start and aren't needed to contribute double digit scoring efforts.
I do have to admit that I've been pretty disappointed so far with his play. Whoever said he couldn't play defense is absolutely right. I've seen him more often than not actually simply turn away and give a driving player the lane for an easy 2. I've never seen a more one-dimensional guard in my life.
With that said, he could serve a very valuable role. Unfortunately, we were hoping he could play a more robust role for us this year.

The guy is adjusting from the European game to the US. He's just getting his feet under him shooting. Thanks to the NCAA, he's effectively a freshman, facing this type of competition for the first time. He was injured in preseason. Considering the shaky state of our wings post Chizley Johnsik, I'll be happy to let him settle in before he starts expanding his game.
I remember how Tom Schafer dropped about twenty pounds after his first year, just to run the court better, and it made a huge impact on his game.

IMO, he will either develop some pump fake/drive moves to complement his 3-pt shot, or he will become a role player off the bench. ISU needs more scoring from his position.
I keep thinking about Dirk Nowitzki. When he first came to the Mavs from Germany, pretty much all he did was hang around the perimeter. Nellie kicked Dirk in the tail and got him to learn some fake/drive moves and some post up moves, and it made him a much better player, and significantly increased his impact on the game.
Now, Lucca doesn't have Dirk's size, so maybe posting up isn't in the cards for Lucca, but he can definitely help himself out but working on some fakes and driving into the 15-18 ft range for some easier, open shots. Faking/driving will also draw fouls, and get Lucca to the line for even easier points.
When you are casting up 3-ptrs with someone in your face and barely/not even drawing iron (as I've seen Lucca do a few times even in the limited number of games I've seen), that might be an indicator that there could be a better shot available for you...

Right now it looks like next year is Craig and Diante and any three role players. So Lucca needs to score more to keep his position. That means a combo of shots.
Maybe he can work with Jake this summer. Sullivan was one of the slowest I have ever seen, but he was great with the pump fake, two dribble jumper...
Lucca would be great if he was playing with guards like Tinsley and Horton (just ask Sullivan, who Lucca is much more athletic than, not like that is saying much), but with this team, he needs to be at least a threat to drive. I'm guessing he's a great FT shooter, so if you can just pump fake from the 3 point line and drive to the basket a couple times, those points would be gravy! Even a pump fake and 2 dribbles for an easy 15 footer. Yes, Lucca does keep a defender out of the lane, but when you are relying on him for points, just drawing a defender to you does not do the job, I'm really surprised more teams don't just face-guard Lucca. I'm also surprised that more teams don't press us, considering any time we do beat the press, we never make teams pay for it by attacking and getting lay-ups. I do think Lucca will make the needed improvements over the next couple of years.
