Something that hasn't been mentioned.....

Deploying the blitzes full on in the 2nd half has to have OCs scrambling a bit as they game plan.

Just even getting the opponents' Oline to have to make some choices can screw things up pretty bad.

Another thing that has been consistent with the defense is that we generally only rush three guys for the first 2-3 possessions and then open the flood gates. Once we dial up the pressure opposing offenses have really struggled.

What is nice about that is if we can weather the storm those first couple possessions, it lets us know if the qb will be antsy or panic back there. If he takes off without the pressure, then we can just spy him the whole night. If he sits in there, then he gets relaxed and when we send heat it blows him up

The guy was a good athlete but had zero football skills.

He thought too much. You could tell that he would go off what should happen and didnt' have the skills to read the play or player. He would hit a hole and not realize that the back was not going into that one and the back would have to be taken down by the saftety.

I've spent the week re-watching this incredible season. One thing that has totally stood out in both the Oklahoma and Texas game is that by the 4th quarter our defense is totally dominating on the field.

I will admit I wasn't totally sold on constantly swapping out the defensive line the entire game. At ISU we always just throw our best 3-4 out there and ride them the entire game. But rotating them like we do we end up with a defensive line that starts to dominate late in the game. They might not in the 1st quarter but by the 4th we have them gassed and start getting a ton of pressure on the QB.

Not sure if it's the adjustments we make during the game or just the fact that we are a lot more fresh by the end. Do we rotate the DB's also? The depth they have built on the defensive line has really made the different in multiple games this year.

So if we are down in the first half tomorrow just keep your head up and know we will dominate the 4th quarter and probably win the game. It has been a recipe we have used many times!!

Totally agree. OU and Texas both come out all pumped up and usually get up early..... and then their kids quit.

This is the exact opposite of good Iowa State teams in the past. Starters were good enough to play with anyone, just no depth to match the intensity for an entire game or season.

Our defense usually struggles in the 1st quarter of games but makes adjustments and then takes over. The last few years Oklahoma looks like they are gonna blow us out but the D figures out what they are doing and the offense feeds off of that. OU probably will get up by 2 scores early, right where we want 'em.

I’ll also never forget Jehvon Miller?? during Campbell’s first game in which we did get beat tweeting out BS that Matt Campbell wasn’t the answer. His takes were as good as his linebacker career at ISU.
Season ending injury vs ou iirc.

Excellent comment & observations. It all is by design by Heacock.

I still remember David Johnson and UNI running crazy on us because he was out of position all day.
Clearly, he was out of position on Campbell as well.

I'll hot take this thread into oblivion.

Jon Heacock is the best defensive coordinator in college football, and he has been for a few years now.
Is saying something blatantly obvious the definition of a “hot take”?

The new strength coach has been as HUGE difference maker this season. The most valuable addition to the team, I think!

The other advantage to subbing on the D line early and often is that it is great for combatting the spread jet offenses. The DL is generally the most difficult to sub when the other team is operating jet. When you from the very start are swapping out D linemen each series you don't get in the situation where you have a guy who has been out there too long and you can't get him off the field because he has only been out there this series since his last extended rest.

Uhg yeah I remember commenting "game not over" when OU got up on us by about 10? with 10 min or so left in game. Everyone (mostly) was saying game over. We came back and won. Needed a couple of big plays, one on special teams, but we did it.

I'd rather go toe to toe with them from beginnig and just clinch it in first half. Let them try to come back! Ha.

The team is balanced, playing complementary football. Some truth to the players being fresher due to the new S&C coach but I think alot of it goes to slowing down the tempo too. In the past, even in the Rhoads era we had good defensive performance but the offense couldn't hold their end of the bargain.

Countless times the defense would get off the field and the offense would go 3 and out and eventually they would get gassed. Even last year the defense would make stops but the offense would sputter.

Now we finally have an offense that can make long sustained drives but does it efficiently, eats up clock and end in scores.

In many past seasons ISU would get killed in the 2nd half due to the lack of depth. Depth makes all the difference when it comes to winning in the 4th quarter.

Campbell has also mentioned in years past he worked the team too hard in practice, which is why we would look unstoppable in October, but by the time November rolled around the team was past its peak. But this year he's taken a different, more relaxed practice schedule, and this year we continued bulldozing teams through November.

Eli Rasheed is the unsung guy on our coaching staff. He has developed a DL with a freakin attitude.

It's also helpful for our D line when Enyi gets gassed that we can plug and play Bankston, Isiah Lee, Josh Bailey, etc. We need to get better pressure tomorrow. 2-3 sacks will go a long way. Make Rattler think more and hesitate.
