Some Jon Rothstein tweets from ISU practice

I could understand having some doubts and not wanting to be too optimistic the previous three years but this year? This years team has way too much proven veteran talent to miss the tourney.

They'll be in, but I do think the jury is out a bit. Ejim and Kane were fantastic last year and you can't always count on the clutch shots dropping. Could easily see a worse record next year and a worse seed. The tourney can be a total crapshoot as well so it is tough to say.

I really don't understand why were even discussing "close games" like it's a statistical part of the game, like three point percentage. All you need to win some close games is talent (check), good coaching (check), and a little bit of luck (we'll see).

Yes, it helps to have a player, or two, that have some giant balls, but all that is is confidence and good coaching.

Only and idiot would say that it would take Fred to be a horrible coach for this to be a bubble team. No, it would mean we are a bit behind last year (check how many close games we won) after losing a couple All-Americans, including the Big 12 POY.

Expectations are high for this team and they should be. However if this team finishes in the play in game that would be tremendously disappointing and I assume Fred would even admit some bad coaching would have to be involved. I could see a 7-10 seed worst case.

Anyone else getting a bright red field when they follow certain links from CF (mobile)? Makes them unreadable.

I think that shows up when you have notifications (like thumbs up or rep) and will go away if you go to the notification center on the mobile site. That's the only time I've gotten something like what you're describing.

I had 1000 more doubts last year going into the season after losing quite of few players. I will never worry again with Hoiberg at the helm. Iowa State is the Baylor in basketball with the high octane offense.

I agree, I will never worry about Freds teams ever again, he has more than proven himself.

Two quotes from that standout, and are consistent with what Fred says every time he talks about this team:
He(Jameel) also plays so hard on every possession. People say playing hard is a skill and that's Jameel in a nutshell. He plays extremely hard and he plays extremely hard on every possession.
It's not a team that I'm ever going to have to motivate to play hard. That's an unbelievable quality that all of these guys have. They're going to go out and compete every time they take the floor. Whether it's one-on-one at 10 o'clock at night or whether we're going to play the next team on our schedule --- they're playing hard.

If I recall correctly, last year at this time Fred kept talking about the chemistry of the team last year and how much the guys seemed to like being around each other - and that definitely showed up on the floor.

This year he can't help talking about how hard the guys play, every practice, every drill. If they are successful in translating that to the court, with the level of athleticism, length and talent on this team, watch out. They could flat kill some teams.

No, not every team has to deal with losing their top players. You seem new to CBB, but if you pay attention you will hear commentators mention from time to time when talking about a good team that "they have everyone back".

Absolutely attrition happens in college basketball. This may be too difficult for you to grasp, but guess why some teams are not as good as the previous year? Not all teams are as good as they were the year before, and there is a strong correlation to those teams being ones that lost a conference POY and AA level players. Of course, there are exceptions when teams get better after losing those type of guys, and hopefully this is that case. Imo there is a reasonable chance it is not, and we will not be as good as last year.

Ok, let's go another route-- we will take a historical approach:

2012: The team loses in the round of 32 after being a "bubble" team. We lose Royce White, Scott C., Chris Allen. We return (notably) Ejim, Babb, McGee, Booker. We add Lucious, Clyburn and Georges.

2013: We improve our NCAA seeding and lose to KU in the semifinals of the Big 12 tourney. We again lose in the round of 32, but do so in a heartbreaking loss. We lose Lucious, Clyburn, Booker, McGee and Babb (arguably, 5 of our top 7 players). We return Georges and Ejim of note. We add Hogue, Morris and Kane, of note.

2014: We make huge strides, being ranked for a large portion of the year. We win the Big 12 tournament and get a 3 seed in the tournament. We get much more production than expected out of Naz, Hogue and Morris. One of the best seasons in history. We lose Ejim and Kane. We return Hogue, Georges, Matt, Naz, Monte. We add the preseason newcomer of the year in BDJ, a juco all American in
McKay and a known quantity in Nader. We also add another solid recruit in Custer.

We've improved every year under Fred, and we've entered past years in much more dire circumstances than this year. I can't fathom how you would think we are in any worse position this year than we have been in previous years, with only 3 years ago having us be on the bubble.

"Past Performance is Not Necessarily Indicative of Future Results"

However, I think you can certainly learn something about the probability of certain future outcomes.

I love what we have for potential this year. I 've watched ISU play for many years. What I know is good teams win a lot of games. Great teams win the close ones. I know we are good. If we are great will be determined by what happens on the court. We are only one half of the equation. Other teams want to be great also. I think at least Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and KSU have visions of being great. Should be fun to watch how this all unfolds. Win or lose its going to be a great ride.

We have every reason to believe this year's team will be better. Will they for sure? of course we don't know yet, but every player interviewed as well has coaches have said that this years team is more athletic, has more depth, and is further along than any other team under Hoiberg. Every indication is that this team has a higher ceiling than last year. I can't understand your pessimism. It's just ridiculous.

No, that is exactly the point. A poster said BDJ is the most physically gifted player. Big deal. How physically gifted a player is in itself means little. It does make for great media day sound bites and off-season speculation.

Being physically gifted is a pretty important part of the basketball player equation. Maybe I've missed something the last few decades.

Not trying to take anything away from Ejim, but in my opinion Ejim's talent and court production should not be as hard to replace. Ejim's numbers were more of a product of Fred's system and Hogue should fit into that role this year just fine. Ejim's leadership and maturity will be missed, however. Georges was really making strides at the end of the season last year and I think he realized that he can be better than most players on the court against any team we play this year which is why he has been so motivated to take care of himself and improve. We might not end the season with a better record than last year but we should be a top20 team all year with a 3-5 seed in the tourney. Bad luck could ruin our tourney run early but we have the POTENTIAL to win the Big12 regular season and make a final four with a little luck on our side.

I get what you are saying, but I think it took a lot more than a system for Ejim to build himself to a player who led the league in rebounding one year and scoring the next as well as winning the league POY award. He worked very hard improving his body and game in the offseason every year and he worked very hard in games and practices in season improving his team. Not impossible to replace, but also not easy to replace in my opinion. I think they can do it by committee, but not having Ejim certainly makes the ceiling lower than it would be if he was back this season.

Someone send these comments to Diallo with the one about a Hoiberg-coached practice like a NBA training camp circled. I would do it but I am an old guy and this is beyond my skill set.

If Mohammed (Diallo) won't come to the mountain (I.S.U.), then someone else surely will!
