Soares out

As suspected, it is an ACL.

So disappointed for her and the team.

Would she be eligible for a medical redshirt if she wanted given how much she already played this year?
Still be a great team next year if she was able/wanted to return!

Not per the rules. She's played in what will end up being over the limit of 30% of the games for the season. Maybe an appeal is possible for her since she only had 13 games in the NCAA. Make a case on that? Everyone else in her class is getting an extra COVID year if they want one but she was not in the NCAA for the season that was enacted for.

That’s what I assumed but couldn’t remember the limit

That blows!!

1st off I am so sorry for her. she had so much potential this season. she was just kind of figuring it all out.

2. this IMO turns ISU into exact replica of last year. sweet 16 is about the ceiling, especially since we seem to not be able to shoot the 3 ball.

Soares is a very talented player and I feel awful for her knowing all she gave this team this year. Also seems to be a great person. I hope wherever she goes next, she has a ton of success. Hopefully she can redshirt if she wishes. Absolutely gutting to hear.

There's no way she wins an appeal. Her case is pretty straightforward. I believe the NCAA limit used to be 20% and there was wiggle room for players just past that limit, but the NCAA got tired of that and bumped it up to a hard 30%.

At least she was able to show the WNBA that she's capable of thriving in Div I basketball before getting hurt. I'm sure a team that would like some more post depth but doesn't need her right away will draft her, since this injury will cost her the WNBA season in addition to the rest of this season.

My understanding is that ISU is looking at appeal options. It also comes down to whether Soares wants that appeal.
She played three seasons of NAIA that were not COVID seasons. Another player attempted an appeal in Soares' situation (missed the COVID season with an injury) and was denied. NCAA has proven to be inflexible on the medical hardship limit unless it's truly close -- if this game were the one that put her over the limit, then maybe getting hurt 2 minutes in could win an appeal. But it wasn't, so I see no pathway to an appeal
