So who could we get?

David Cutliffe from Duke would be towards the top of my short list if I was in Pollard's position. He helped Duke end an 18 year bowl drought and they play in a pretty decent football conference. Plus he has a brand of football that I think he could make work at ISU.

Honestly I have no idea who would realistically consider ISU. I mean that with all do respect, but it is a very tough sell. The B12 is a tough conference and you would really have to work some magic to get ISU in a position to consistently compete. It is a risky job for an up and coming coach to take. If I were an up and coming coach I'd rather coach at a level lower than the B12 and wait for a bigger fish to come calling than take a job at ISU and risk ruining my head coaching future because I decided to take a job that was just too big of a mountain to climb. That's reality. Fortunately there are coaches out there who like a challenge.

Need someone who can either recruit well or develop players well. That is why we are struggling, because Rhoads and his staff have a difficult time doing either of those.

Chizik was a splash hire?

Johnny Orr is an example of a splash hire.

This fanbase was jacked about Chizik. If we let Paul go next year and hire someone of similar status as Chizik (national championship, top tier coordinator) we would be jacked again.

Silly to act otherwise.

A coach that wins consistently here (6-8 wins every year) needs to do both extremely well. A GREAT recruiter might be able to get ISU to land recruiting classes that or 5th or 6th in the conference, and even that might be dreaming.

People look at K State (and rightly so) for a "formula." Here's the formula, get lucky and find one of the 5 best college football coaches of all time. Seems simple, right?

True, there are a lot of people that enjoy revising history. Chizik was overwhelmingly hailed as a coup by Pollard. The introduction press conference and jump in ticket sales told the story.

The only way I see Mangino becoming head coach is if we fire Rhoads midseason, made Mangino interim, and then promoted Mangino at season's end. And I wouldn't be opposed to this for next year if Rhoads gets us off to another slow start.

I realize a lot of the good suggestions don't fit this description, but I'd really like an offensive minded guy with o-line coaching experience, previous head-coaching experience, who's also a great recruiter.

My guess is we probably wouldn't get a guy who fits that exact description.

With that said, here's some options in no particular order:

Jim Leavitt: Former South Florida coach
Pat Narduzzi: Current Michigan State DC
Doug Meacham: Current TCU co-OC
Craig Bohl: Current Wyoming HC (not near as high on him as others)
Bret Bielema: Current Arkansas HC (we'd only get him if he's fired and is desperate)
Doc Holliday: Current Marshall HC
Ed Warinner: co-OC and o-line coach at Ohio State

Its the same **** as them trying to elevate mac the knife as some sort of modern day Earle Bruce here. Revision revision revision

OK, you may be right, but what's the worst thing that could happen? He'd say "thanks but no thanks." So what?
My concern with Pollard is that he's not aggressive enough in coaching searches. He offers jobs to guys who he knows will take it. CPR was unemployed when Pollard offered him. Hoiberg said that he was just hoping for a second interview, but instead was offered the job on the spot. Said he assumed JP had other candidates to talk to first.

While the Chizik-era at ISU was a mess, the hiring of Chiz was just about as aggressive as you can get in a coaching hire. The end result might have been a fail, but the initial hire was a home run if your #1 concern was an aggressive hire.

I don't know about Bohl, 1 year and gone at Wyoming without seeing much really out of that program?

Here's a name: Tom Herman.

He's been a decent OC in both the Big 12 and the B1G. He knows Ames and he knows Iowa State. He was actually quite a bit more successful here than I think most people know. I'm sure he'd be eager to give a shot at head coaching somewhere.

You might find this surprising but the list wouldn't be much different than the ones interested in Iowa.

Mike Leach- WSU HC
Josh Heupel- Oklahoma OC
Phil Cunningham- Baylor OC
Mark Mangino
Scott Frost- Oregon OC

I think Mangino is still the main option if Rhoads goes. Proven winner in the Big 12. If you can take Kansas to the Orange Bowl, you can take Iowa State to new levels.

One great year and, otherwise, not too great, and a downward trend at the end:

IF this staff has to be replaced after next season, which is just as likely as them being retained. I would like to see Iowa State go balls out after Scott Frost

Nebraska, UNI, and now a dynamic offensive coordinator at Oregon, huge splash hire
