So who could we get?

Whenever we are set to hire a new HC (likely December 2016), IMO what we can't do is get "caught in the middle". For example, Turner Gill. I do not think you eliminate a lot of uncertainty until you start paying the type if cash we don't have. I'd rather save some on the HC and have top paid coordinators and position coaches.

I agree. Get that guy here now. Is love to see that offense in the Big 12. At least there would be no more booing on fourth down, because we'd be going for it every time.

Stitt is probably the biggest risk of anyone you could plausibly hire. He is at a school with high academic standards. Can he recruit athletes to compete in the Big 12? Is he just winning because of his, IMO, enormous advantage in strategy? If he is, will that translate? I don't know. I think the variance is huge. I don't think he's a guy that hovers between 5-7 wins for 10 years. I think he's a guy who will either have a couple bad years and be gone or he's a guy that gets you to 8-10 wins on a consistent basis and it all comes down to the staff he can attract and the recruiting he can do. I would be game to find out with him. Hell, a guy who doesn't have a problem with students creating shirts that say "Stitt Happens" is fine by me. Also, in listening to some stuff from him, I kind of get the impression that if someone gives him his shot, he'll be incredibly loyal.

I don't think Stitt will get a HC job before he's an OC. I just can't see someone making that jump.

Okay so if we're throwing names out like Stitt, why not Aaron Keen. Former Minnesota State, Mankato coach. Lost 2 games while being the head coach. Kind of got screwed when Hoffner decided to come back, but that's another story. He's now at Eastern Michigan as the Special Teams coordinator.

Great coach, really relates to the players.

I wish we could find a guy that had proven head coaching experience in the big 12. A BCS win. A national championship as an offensive coordinator as well as another 11-0 season. And has a coaching pedigree from one of the greatest college football coaches of all time.

Where in the world could we find a guy like that. Probably only a pipe dream. He'd never want to be at a place like iowa state.

That would be CSU's Coach Jim McElwain

The eventual new HC shall not have any prior ties to existing or past ISU coaching staffs (that includes Mangino, Herman, Ash, etc.)

The eventual new HC shall not be a retread or have baggage that can used against ISU in recruiting circles (that include Mangino)

The eventual new HC shall an extensive OC background in the spread option or other spread offense.

The eventual new HC shall not be a former DC.

The eventual new HC shall be a member of an existing D1 staff, have prior Power 5 program experience and doesn't have to have prior HC experience.

Here are a few names I would look at whenever the time comes to look for a new head coach:
1. Willie Fritz 1st year as HC at Georgia Southern. Prior to that he was HC at Sam Houston State for 4yrs and prior to that HC at Central Missouri State for 13 yrs. He know has been the head coach in the Midwest, Texas and GA/FL all important recruiting grounds for Iowa State. All the programs he has been at he's had winning programs.
2. Bob Still HC at Colorado School of Mines. Highly regarded for his offensive mind. He is a native of Nebraska.
3. Adam Dorrel HC at NW Missouri State. Has continued NW Missouri football tradition.
4. Craig Bohl 1st year HC at Wyoming. Had multiple NC's at ND State. Prior to that was an assistant at NE.
5. Scott Frost OC at Oregon.

I made the Stitt suggestion over a year ago (you can search if you want) and I'm not going to find it - too hard. BUT - I think it would be an amazing get, especially if we wanted to think outside of the box. I LOVE that he almost always goes for it on 4th down (See the Iowa Nice guy for other funnies associated w/ that line of thought). I think he would be a great get...

That being said - and maybe this has been answered - what is the 'process' that JP or anybody else uses to find out who's interested? Do we send out feelers - do we cold call - do we have a search firm like people do for doc's and executives? I'd sure like to know...and know who's on it!

They pay a lot of money to some sort of search firm to find guys. JP takes the top so many names though and makes the final decision.

Fred Hoiberg. He played football, is an innovative coach, and exploits mismatches. Give him a quick 30 minute training video and he'll have us in the Playoff by year 2.

I agree, I think that whoever the new coach is he needs to be an offensive guy.

I hope for Frost, but there will be better opportunities for him. Maybe we can overpay for once.

My #1 qualification is proven success in rebuilding moribund NCAA BCS programs. For the record, Craig Bohl hasn't been at Wyoming long enough to demonstrate any success there; his success at FCS (Div. 1AA) translating to the Big 12? I refer you to Donnie Duncan who also was very successful in FCS -- success in lower levels of CFB doesn't always translate to the Big 8/Big 12.

Thinking back, the most successful HCs in my living memory at ISU had previous experience in building CFB programs with the exception of Johnny Majors -- he had a stellar staff of assistants where more than one became NFL HOF coaches. Earle Bruce built Tampa University (now USF?) to respectability and a bowl game in an era of very few bowl games. Dan McCarney was part of two rebuilding projects at SUI and Wisky prior to being hired as ISU's HC. That's why I'm making previous success in rebuilding projects such a priority.

The University of Tampa Spartans dropped football one or two years after Earle left. The University of South Florida is an entirely different university.

Hopefully he didn't coordinate their entrance to the season at Eastern Michigan... http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/p...-team-sledgehammers-wall-wall-puts-up-a-fight
