So the Cupboard is Bare...?

You sure about that? Maybe you're thinking of Paul Shirley. He was at ISU for a few years on academic scholarship, until they gave him an athletic one either his junior or senior year. Shirley was and is an INCREDIBLY smart guy, my cousin was in a physics class with him and she said he tore it up. Nice guy too:yes4lo:

Skoglund was a Eustachy recruit that was on athletic scholarship, albeit a waste of one. Maybe he was really smart, but I don't remember hearing anything about it.

Yes, Skoglund was a genius. He had a 36 on his ACT, and Eustachy loved keeping him on the team because his 4.0 boosted the team GPA considerably. He strongly considered skipping his senior year because he was going to graduate early and earn a ton.

LOL! I've heard of some Larry stories like that. Someone once told me that during one practice they saw the only guy on the team that was able to avoid "the wrath of Larry" at one time or another was Paul Shirley. I know this was part of the reason that Brandon Hawkins and Zach Fortune transfered. I knew someone on Brandon's floor and apparently Brandon took Larry's outbursts in practice to heart a little too much at times to the point he'd almost cry talking about it and got to the point he didn't find basketball fun. I can see how some players can take that kind of stuff too personal but the mentally strong ones use it as motivation and knew that Larry also could be very complimentary to the press when they played well.

Mike Taylor = Too many TO's, Needs better game savy, but must Play
B Jacobson = Too Slow, Can't Defend, Best 3 pt Shot if he can get it off?
M Currie= needs more ability, plays well at times, not a game changer
D Dunston= needs to shoot more, only hits the big 3 when it counts
C McIntosh= does not shoot, TO's at times, can not control the game

Our New Secret Weapon.....

Chris Ceaser.....6'4" 185# Athletic as Hell, Senior Leadership, He is from Texas he must be Good...?

Come on Mac what do we have to lose....?
does anybody realize that his name is Dodie Dunson, not Dodie Dunston? Even McDermott calls him Dunston. What's the deal?

I agree... I heard McDermott in the post games at the beginning of the year and he kept calling him dunston... and it bugged the heck out of me... but I figure that had been corrected by now... not sure though.

Skogs was on an academic scholarship.

He's still not "athletic as hell" as the original post says, but he did have a decent game and should get more minutes. Maybe he can be an X factor down the stretch.

If I recall the story correctly...Skogs was on academic scholarship his first year but everyone thought he was on an athletic one because he would have been given one had he not had the academic one, but he didn't want people to feel that he was somehow a less important player on the team. He then ended up switching to an athletic scholarship after his first year (maybe I just dreamed this up, anyone else remember this story?)

I remember seeing him eating in Friley dining hall and afterwards he would go out and get on a bike to ride to class. It was probably a full-sized bike, but he made it look like a tricycle. I think his knees pretty much hit the handlebars.

I'm pretty sure that the NCAA doesn't allow the school to carry athletes on academic scholarships. Basketball for instance has 13 scholarships. That means only 13 players on the team can be on any kind of a scholarship. You can't have 13 players on athletic scholarship and 2 on academic scholarships. I also think that football and basketball scholarships have to be counted first. For instance if an athlete plays both track and football, his scholarship must be counted against football. That is put into place to keep teams from placing football players on bowling, archery and so forth to build up their numbers above the 85 man limit.

I believe that Skogs and Paul Shirley both graduated with Mechanical Engineering degrees, and yes, one of the funniest sights you would ever see was Skogs riding his bike on campus. Marcus Fizer was also quite humorous riding his bike, he rode around on a rusty Huffy that was way too small for him. And he was pretty huge.

I agree - it's fun to Ceaser play. The guy is a walk-on, already has one degree and is working on a masters.
